THE OPPORTUNITY  

Reporting to the Senior Principal, the Analyst plays an integral role in evaluating and supporting direct investments and venture and growth equity fund commitments in strategic partners. The Analyst assists in developing sector investment themes, evaluating investment opportunities, executing transactions, monitoring the performance of portfolio companies, and supporting management teams or strategic partners in value-creation initiatives, such as follow-on M&A, financings, or strategic programs. Additionally, there will be opportunity to deliver on value creation initiatives within Private Equity and BCI more broadly, as part of our AI Adoption efforts. Analysts drive action by fostering collaborative relationships with stakeholders, demonstrating a long-term value investing mindset, and exhibiting excellent interpersonal and communication skills.   

This position is based in Victoria, BC. 

 

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH  

The Private Equity department manages a diverse international portfolio of approximately $35 billion in global private equity investments comprising of fund, direct and co-investments. Portfolio growth over the coming years will be driven by an increased emphasis on direct investment, strong partner relationships and actively creating value from the portfolio to deliver superior returns for our clients.  

Our department currently consists of ~75 professionals spanning offices located in Victoria, London and New York City, organized into six sub-teams: Direct Investments, Fund Investments, Venture & Growth, Value Creation, Reporting & Analytics, and Operations. Our Direct Investments team can be further broken down into six sector-focused teams that cover the Business Services, Consumer, Financial Services, Healthcare, Industrials, and Technology, Media & Communications sectors. 

 

WHAT YOU BRING  

  • An undergraduate degree (finance, compsci), distinguished by academic achievement 

  • 2+ years of post-undergraduate experience in a relevant field (i.e. venture capital, private equity, investment banking, management consulting, strategic finance, product etc.) 

  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in the venture capital and growth equity asset class 

  • Strong skills in financial modeling, analysis, valuation, and research 

  • Experience with Anthropic; desire to build with AI for improved decision making 

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including presentations 

  • High degree of attention to detail and organization 

  • Ability to effectively manage projects under pressure and within tight deadlines 

  • Solid business acumen and judgement; curiosity about new business models 

  • Ability to function both independently and as part of a high-performance team 

  • Familiarity with software including Anthropic, FactSet, Affinity and Pitchbook 

  • Preparedness for extensive travel within North America  

  • Valid work authorization in Canada 

Preferred 

  • Progress towards or completion of a CFA, CPA, or Master's degree in business/economics 

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Investment Analysis and Execution 

  • Contributes to investment ideas and builds relationships with founders and funds 

  • Supports multiple workstreams including investment activity and value creation  

  • Supports the preliminary analysis of investment opportunities, reviews public information, meets with management teams and develops valuation frameworks   

  • Contributes to investment themes and identifies merits, risks, and mitigating factors for potential investment opportunities  

  • Coordinates and completes most due diligence sections with minimal guidance and completes advanced sections with guidance. Takes a structured approach with an appropriate level of analysis in various workstreams of due diligence  

  • Synthesizes findings, key analysis and supporting documents in an organized and documented manner 

  • Writes effective screeners, deal alerts and investment memorandums, and assists in coordinating the internal review/approval process  

  • Manages the CRM, including pipeline management, accurate entry and note-taking 

  • Interacts effectively with third party advisors as well as with BCI internal groups (e.g. technology, legal, tax, risk, etc.)  

  • Works as an integrated part of deal teams, supporting the diligence of commercial, financial, tax, legal, governance, human resource and ESG aspects of prospective investments  

Portfolio Monitoring and Oversight 

  • Monitors assigned investments identifying relevant opportunities and risks including: tracking/evaluating performance metrics; ongoing review against original investment thesis and strategic fit; and significant changes impacting the company, valuation issues and industry developments  

  • Supports the development of processes to ensure sustained long-term returns  

  • Systematically develops objective and rigorous views on the long-term health and potential of companies within the portfolio; leads monthly and quarterly reporting efforts 

  • Supports performance monitoring and value-creation initiatives 

Projects/Ongoing Knowledge 

  • Keeps up to date on industry, venture capital and SaaS trends (M&A) 

  • Works on specific projects to enhance team capabilities, such as supporting the development of analyst talent   

  • Develops key strategic relationships with co-sponsor partners, consultants/advisors, limited partners, internal resources, etc.  

 

WHERE YOU WILL WORK  

This role will be based in our office in downtown Victoria, BC. 

 

SALARY RANGE  

The annualized salary range for this role is $110,000 - $125,000. 

BCI offers a competitive total rewards package, including a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, and paid time off. We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration for internal equity and job structure. The base salary will consider factors such as the individual's skill set, experience, and internal equity. We aim for actual pay to be around the market median for expected performance and the upper quartile for excellent performance. Actual salaries may vary based on experience and expertise.
