The AML Data Governance & Defect Management Specialist will play a critical role in supporting the AML Data Management team by managing the lifecycle of data defects and issues, coordinating remediation efforts, and ensuring timely and accurate reporting. This position requires strong collaboration with business and technology stakeholders, excellent communication skills, and the ability to operate effectively in both project-based and business-as-usual environments. Banking or financial institution experience is required. While prior AML experience is an asset, candidates must demonstrate the ability and commitment to quickly learn new subject matter and acquire relevant domain knowledge as needed for the role.
Manage the lifecycle of data defects and issues, including intake, triage, prioritization, remediation, validation, closure, and documentation in line with company policies and regulatory standards.
Track and monitor progress of open defects, ensuring timely follow-up, escalation when needed, and resolution aligned with business objectives.
Collaborate with business units, technology partners, and subject matter experts to clarify issues, drive remediation, and confirm completion.
Build and maintain effective professional relationships, ensuring clear communication across all levels of the organization.
Prepare and deliver updates and reports on defect status, trends, and remediation outcomes for management and stakeholders.
Maintain accurate records and documentation to support audits and compliance reviews.
Organize work information to ensure accuracy, completeness, and readiness for audit.
Apply sound judgment to identify, diagnose, and resolve problems within established guidelines.
Operate effectively in both project (SDLC) and Agile environments, aligning defect management activities with project milestones and delivery schedules.
Use JIRA for defect logging, workflow management, and reporting; maintain dashboards and reports to support transparency and decision-making.
Support the implementation and improvement of data governance procedures, ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to best practices and training materials.
Demonstrate adaptability and commitment to learning new concepts and domain knowledge as needed for the role.
Bachelor’s degree in business, information management, data/analytics, or a related field.
Minimum 5 years of experience in project management, defect or issue management, governance, or related operations within financial services or a regulated industry.
Experience working in both SDLC and Agile delivery models, with an understanding of change management principles.
Proficiency with JIRA for issue tracking, workflow management, dashboard creation, and reporting.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to present complex information clearly to various audiences, including senior management.
Experience working with cross-functional teams in a matrixed environment.
Detail-oriented with a focus on accurate recordkeeping, audit-readiness, and regulatory compliance.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
