AltaGas - Operations Superintendent (RIPET)
Reporting to the Manager, Operations, the Operations Superintendent will coordinate the efforts of the RIPET operations team to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operations at both facilities. This position is part of the Facility Leadership Team and actively participates in risk management activities to align priorities with operational tasks. The role is based at Ridley Island, BC with occasional travel required to Calgary, AB
This position offers company-sponsored relocation to Prince Rupert.
What You'll Do
- Provide supervision and leadership to all Operations staff, including hiring and developing personnel, conducting performance monitoring and reviews, managing STI bonus program recommendations, and providing feedback and coaching as necessary.
- Monitor operations KPIs and report facility performance to senior leadership.
- Oversee shift scheduling to ensure adequate coverage to meet operational needs
- Review the team’s use of software-based maintenance programs, ensuring all Work Orders and PMs are current and completed effectively.
- Collaborate with the Operations Manager and Maintenance Supervisor to optimize facility performance, including prioritizing routine and non-routine maintenance, capital projects, and turnarounds.
- Develop and manage annual operations budgets; assist in administering budget spend to meet or exceed targets.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations and follow Emergency Response Procedures.
- Collaborate with Senior Operators or Operations Leads to improve site-specific training, process safety management, and special projects, including updating operating procedures.
- Ensure all work activities comply with AltaGas guidelines, EOH&S standards, codes of practice, and policies, and address concerns immediately.
- Participate as an active member of the RIPET field leadership team to ensure alignment across operations, maintenance, safety, engineering, and remote subject matter experts.
- Troubleshoot facility or process equipment concerns and assist the operations team as needed.
- Steward the reporting and documentation all health, safety, security, environmental, or EOH&S incidents, concerns, or near misses, and record all non-conformances.
- Act as lead contact for measurement verifications, fuel/flare/vent inquiries, metering error actions, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Assume Chief Power Engineer responsibilities in their absence.
- Act as Incident Commander when the Operations Manager is unavailable.
- Participate in on-call rotation for emergency response duties.
- Perform other duties necessary for the safe and effective operation of the facilities.
What You Bring
- 8 to 15 years of process facility operations experience, preferably in gas operations.
- Minimum 5 years of previous supervisory experience leading operations staff.
- Minimum 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate or equivalent certification required
- Prior turnaround, commissioning or outage expertise preferred.
- Full working knowledge of Natural Gas Facility Inlet systems, Dehy systems, Cryogenic Liquids Extraction systems, Fractionation systems, and gas compression systems.
- Ability to identify and respond quickly to operating deviations to maintain safe conditions and minimize downtime.
- Excellent leadership skills with a proven ability to inspire, coach, and develop high-performing teams.
- Previous experience with leading a unionized workforce is considered an asset
- Excellent understanding of environmental impacts, health, safety, and security risks in the energy sector.
- Current H2S Alive, First Aid, CPR, Confined Space Entry certifications preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret operating manuals and Facility P&IDs.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and maintenance management systems.
Compensation
This position offers a base salary range of $160,000 to $190,000 annually, based on experience, education, and skills. AltaGas also provides a competitive relocation allowance and a comprehensive benefits package, including health coverage, retirement plans, and paid time off starting on day one.
