The UAS (Uncrewed Aerial Systems) Safety and Airworthiness Engineer (M/F) position is within Airbus UpNext Spain, based in Getafe, starting ASAP, and it consists of a limited contract linked to the deliverable of the demonstrator - estimated completion date end of December 2028.
Main responsibilities
System Safety Engineering and Airworthiness: Define and execute the Safety Assurance and Airworthiness strategy, leading all safety assessments (FHA, SSA) to establish a robust system safety case for autonomous functions.Establish the regulatory framework and approval roadmap (ConOps-based), balancing certification with operational approvals while identifying and bridging gaps for flight testing and future deployment.
Validation & Verification (V&V) for Safety: Contribute to define and drive the Verification & Validation (V&V) strategy and plan to ensure all safety-related technical requirements are successfully met. Support V&V activities using advanced simulation infrastructure, including Software in the Loop (SiL) and Hardware in the Loop (HiL) environments, with a focus on safety-related tests.
Test Support: Support ground-based and flight testing, including the management of scenarios and metrics, ensuring evidence capture, and supporting flight readiness, with a focus on safety parameters and compliance.
Knowledge Capitalization & Handover: Contribute to the analysis and capitalization of all technical data, ensuring a complete and valuable technical handover of all project learning and operational assets at completion.
Risks & Opportunities: Identify and analyze risks & opportunities affecting the development of the UAS autonomy architecture, implementing corrective and preventive actions agreed within the project reviews.

What you bring:
Proven experience in Systems Engineering, with a strong command of requirements management, system integration and V&V methodologies.
Demonstrated expertise in system safety assessment methodologies, including leading Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs) and System Safety Assessments (SSAs) for airborne systems. Experience with aerospace systems design assurance standards and regulations (e.g. ARP4761A/ED135, ARP4754B/ED-79B, ED-280, DO-178C/ED-12C, DO-254/ED-80)
Knowledge of certification frameworks, aerospace standards and operational approvals requirements, including the SORA (Specific Operations Risk Assessment) framework for UAS. Experience liaising with airworthiness authorities is a plus.
Knowledge of avionics systems, airborne software and hardware.
Knowledge and experience on UAS operations.
Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary engineering teams, manage technical risks and make critical decisions in a fast-paced, agile technology development environment.
Strong English communication skills to champion the project’s technical vision to stakeholders and sponsors.
Eagerness to take initiatives to propose simpler and efficient ways of working. Impatience and burning desire to attain rapidly, along with a healthy skepticism for progress. Ability to cope with short deadlines.
