Your Opportunity
Join Mission Australia as an After-Hours Support Worker at Common Ground in East Perth. Our brand-new service in the heart of Perth is set to redefine how we support people experiencing homelessness. Common Ground Perth has been developed with input from community housing organisations, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), and people with lived experience of homelessness and delivered in partnership with Nyoongar Outreach Services (NOS). This initiative represents a significant step forward in creating long term housing stability and holistic support for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Common Ground features 112 self-contained apartments, many are reserved for people who have experienced chronic homelessness. The site will also include communal spaces, 24/7 support, and integrated commercial areas, all designed to foster a sense of safety, dignity, and belonging.
In this role, you will provide trauma informed support to residents and contribute to a safe and welcoming environment for all stakeholders. Your role is crucial in ensuring service compliance with policies and procedures while fostering positive outcomes for residents.
This is an on-site position, with solely overnight active on-duty shifts and weekend day shifts, requiring a practical approach to maintain safety, build rapport, and assist residents through transitions in a dynamic community setting.
Applicants must be available for evenings and overnights Monday to Sunday and days on weekends.
Your Key Responsibilities
Conduct hourly safety and wellbeing checks throughout the site, ensuring a safe environment for all residents and visitors.
De-escalate behaviours and incidents using trauma informed approaches including accurate reporting and timely escalation when required.
Build rapport with residents by engaging positively while maintaining clear and professional boundaries.
Manage visitor access and movement on site in accordance with agreed procedures and safety protocols.
Complete comprehensive shift handovers, incident reports, case notes, and data entry into MA Connect in an accurate and timely manner.
Maintain site safety by monitoring the environment, responding to risks, and liaising with on-call services, emergency support, or internal teams as needed.
Support residents with basic after-hours needs, transitions, and access or maintenance queries in line with procedures, referring matters to the team.
Requirements for Success
Minimum Certificate III in a relevant field, with additional qualifications such as Mental Health or related community services training is highly regarded.
Demonstrated experience supporting vulnerable people, ideally within homelessness, community services, housing, security, justice, or similar settings.
Strong capability in trauma informed practice and de-escalation, with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training viewed favourably.
Ability to build safe, respectful relationships with residents while maintaining professional boundaries.
Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with understanding of cultural protocols and community engagement.
Confident written and verbal communication skills, including basic administrative capabilities.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a two-person after-hours team, including capability to walk the site for scheduled checks.
First Aid and CPR Certificate.
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
