What You’ll Do:

In this role, you’ll perform hazardous duty as an Aerospace Physiology Specialist inside hypobaric and hyperbaric chambers exposed to pressure equivalents of 165 feet of sea water (fsw) and 35,000 feet mean sea level (msl).  Present formal training lectures to NASA astronauts, aircrew, flight surgeons, and test subjects on the various physiological hazards of flying and diving operations.  Perform as medical monitors during pressurized Human in the Loop (HITL) testing events at various NASA facilities.  Provide support for Medical Officers by conducting and assisting with basic medical evaluations, test documentation, and emergency treatment as a Basic Life Support first responder.  Additional duties include performing administrative and maintenance tasks and entries into the Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Incumbent will perform other assignments and duties as required.

You will:

  • Assist in preparing daily assignments for medical coverage for the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) and other testing locations on Johnson Space Center.
  • Perform as a Physiological Training Instructor during hypobaric/hyperbaric chamber operations.
  • Act as a medical test team member for hyperbaric/hypobaric chamber operations at the NBL, Crew Thermal System Division, and other JSC test and evaluations.
  • Perform as a crew member for the NBL hypobaric chamber as an inside observer, chamber operator, lock operator, recorder, crew chief, and lecture observer.
  • Perform as a crew member for the NBL hyperbaric chamber as an inside tender, dive supervisor, chamber operator, timekeeper, and crew chief.
  • Assist the medical officer in pre-dive/flight physical examinations.
  • Assist and provide medical support to the medical officer during all supported tests.
  • Responsible for personal and student oxygen equipment inspections.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Performs as a Physiological Training Instructor conducting formal lectures to NASA Astronauts, aircrew members, flight surgeons, test subjects, and other various NASA support personnel

What You Bring:

Use your experience and judgment to provide quality instruction and subject matter expertise for NASA’s Aerospace Physiology program and be willing to learn and operate in altered-pressure environments.

Your Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 6 years of related experience; or 10 years of equivalent related work experience (Required).
  • Graduate of the Army, Navy, Air Force Aerospace Physiology specialist course (Required).
  • 3 years practical experience teaching Aerospace Physiology, including operation and maintenance of low-pressure chambers (Required).
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of emergency medical hyperbaric treatment, medical terminology and proper usage of medical supplies and medications (Desired).
  • Should complete/maintain EMT-Basic certification with Texas State licensure within 12 months (Desired).

Required Skills/Training:

  • Must be able to pass an initial and annual NASA Lock Observer physical examinations.
  • Must have basic maintenance experience with hypo/hyperbaric chambers.
  • Must have
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
