Job Summary: Positions are located within ATO, Mission Support Services (AJV), Aeronautical Information Services (AJV-A), Aeronautical Charting Group (AJV-A2). The Aeronautical Charting Group implements and manages the FAA Aeronautical Charting Group program in support of the National Airspace System (NAS). AJV-A2 plans, develops, provides quality control, coordinates, disseminates, and processes aeronautical charts and products for safe navigation throughout the NAS.

Major Duties:

  • FG-11 DUTIES: Major duties include: Uses software tools, charts, maps, reports, and applicable source documents, to populate and revise databases, create digital files, and evaluates aeronautical charts for publication; Assists with technical evaluation/application of criteria and knowledge of aeronautical information; Designs, develops, maintains, and revises aeronautical data, charts, and publications; Conducts chart compilation on aeronautical data, chart & prepublication products, and publications; Identifies and reports discrepancies in data, chart products and notifies manager of unresolved problems and work issues; Ensures appropriate application of Federal Aviation Regulations, specifications, standards, and criteria; Reports errors which generate Notices to Air Missons (NOTAMs), Charting Notices and Safety Alerts related to aeronautical data, chart products and publications. Reports potential issues and proposes recommendations to management for preventative action. FG-12 DUTIES: Major duties include: Uses software tools, charts, maps, reports, and applicable source documents to populate and revise databases, create digital files, and evaluates aeronautical charts for publication. Designs, develops, maintains, and revises aeronautical data, products, and publications; Performs technical evaluation/application of criteria and expert knowledge of aeronautical information; Ensures appropriate application of Federal Aviation Regulations, specifications, standards, and criteria; Identifies discrepancies in data, chart products, or publications and notifies manager of unresolved problems and work issues; Develops, researches, and advises on Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs), Charting Notices and Safety Alerts related to aeronautical data, chart products, and publications; Establishes and maintains effective communications with stakeholders involved in chart processes; Identifies appropriate data sources from a wide range of available technical material; Researches, analyzes, and recommends alternative solutions to complex problems; Collects, researches, interprets, and consolidates aeronautical data sufficient to develop or revise aeronautical charts and products; Conducts analytical studies and projects that involve key FAA programs and organizations; Provides briefings and presentations to internal and external aviation stakeholders, including other government agencies and private industries. FG-13 DUTIES: Major duties include: Uses software tools, charts, maps, reports, and applicable source documents, to populate and revise databases, create digital files, and evaluates aeronautical charts for publication for aviation stakeholders; Evaluates work-in-progress and at the conclusion of critical functions and production cycles; Provides technical direction, mentoring and training to staff. Involved with formal and on-the-job training; Responsible for the creation and maintenance of training materials which includes new employee training, currency/proficiency and application training; Responsible for the creation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), work instructions and internal guidance for the team; Participates in workgroups for program or policy development; Researches, organizes, and writes materials often involved with complex issues; Analyzes/evaluates data to determine solutions for current problems and future approaches to long-range planning; Communicates technical and non-technical information with internal and external aviation stakeholders; Gathers and exchange information, explain regulations, specifications, and requirements, provide feedback or status of assigned programs, or discuss a customer's concern; Responsible for technical writing and presentations for team members, charting stakeholders, and management. All levels may perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: To qualify for this position at the FG-11 level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the FG-9 level. Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized Experience includes: Experience using Bentley MicroStation, Bentley Map, Bentley OpenCities, ESRI ArcMap, and/or ESRI ArcGIS Pro, or other mapping software to apply basic cartographic and geographic principles for creating, maintaining, and revising aeronautical or other map or chart products, aeronautical datasets, aeronautical information publications, or radar video maps. OR Education Substitution: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. To qualify for this position at the FG-12 level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the FG-11 level. Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized Experienceincludes: Experience as a technical specialist in the full range of complex technical aeronautical charting data; analyzing operational aeronautical/navigational practices, techniques, and methods; utilizing one or more applications of Bentley MicroStation, Bentley Map, Bentley OpenCities, ESRI ArcMap, and/or ESRI ArcGIS Pro for creating, maintaining, and revising aeronautical charting products, aeronautical datasets, aeronautical information publications, or radar video maps. To qualify for this position at the FG-13 level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the FG-12 level. Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized Experience includes: Experience as a subject-matter expert providing high-level technical aeronautical and operational advice to other specialist related to cartographic principles; ensuring quality control of complex aeronautical information procedures by providing subject-matter guidance to other specialists related to creating, maintaining, and revising aeronautical charting products, publications, or radar video maps; and recommending changes in policies, procedures, or specifications as it relates to aeronautical charting products, publications or radar video maps.
