Advanced Trainee - Addiction Psychiatry

About the Role

As a member of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the delivery of Addiction Specialist Services across the Department. This includes providing high‑quality clinical care in clinical liaison, outpatient clinics, and the Depaul House Residential Alcohol and Drug Withdrawal Unit.

You will be employed through the St Vincent’s Department of Addiction Medicine (DoAM) and participate in an Addiction Medicine Training Program accredited by the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine. The position offers comprehensive training within St Vincent’s DoAM and, where appropriate, through external partner agencies that provide drug and alcohol services in collaboration with DoAM. This ensures broad clinical exposure and a well‑rounded training experience in addiction medicine.

You will be responsible for delivering high‑quality clinical care to patients experiencing drug and alcohol problems. This includes providing evidence‑based clinical services, contributing to service evaluation and research activities, and demonstrating a strong commitment to ongoing learning and professional development in Addiction Medicine.

During external rotations, you will continue to provide patient care under the supervision of accredited Addiction Medicine specialists. The role offers broad clinical exposure across the spectrum of addiction services, including general outpatient care, consultation‑liaison on inpatient wards, inpatient withdrawal management, opioid agonist treatment (including long‑acting buprenorphine formulations), dual‑diagnosis care, pain medicine, and correctional health.

In addition, the position includes opportunities for external rotations to specialised services such as the Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR), youth‑focused programs, and women’s health addiction services, ensuring a comprehensive and diverse training experience.

Duties

  • Undertake clinical roles within the department commensurate to your experience and training.
  • Assist in the achievement of the department’s activity and quality targets
  • Make an active contribution to medical student education and post graduate education sessions
  • Provide mentorship to the Junior Medical Staff of the Department.
  • Participate in Clinical Research Projects relevant to Addiction Medicine.
  • Participate in the implementation of relevant policies and procedures within the Department and the Hospital as required

Classifications for this position will range from HM25 - HM30 ($129,048.40 - $177,622.12 per annum, pro-rata for part time)

What You will Bring

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery or equivalent
  • To formally enter the training program for the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine, applicants must be registered medical practitioners in Australia or New Zealand and hold Fellowship of one of the following Colleges or Faculties:
    • Anaesthetics (FANZCA)
    • Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM)
    • Emergency Medicine (FACEM)
    • General Practice (FRACGP and FRNZCGP)
    • Internal Medicine (FRACP)
    • Paediatrics & Child Health (FRACP)
    • Pain Medicine (FFPMANZCA)
    • Psychiatry (FRANZCP)
    • Public Health Medicine (FAFPHM)
    • Rehabilitation Medicine (FAFRM)
  • Doctors who have completed Basic Training (including success in the FRACP Examination) of the RACP are also eligible to train under the Chapter.
  • In the case of overseas trained specialists (including general practitioners) they must have been considered equivalent by the relevant Australasian medical college, and should apply via the AMC.
  • Registration with AHPRA

The Department of Addiction Medicine at St. Vincent's (which includes Depaul House Alcohol and Drug Withdrawal unit) is one of Australia’s leading centers for the medical treatment of drug or alcohol addiction.
