Advanced IP Scientist (m/f/d)

Summary:

The Advanced IP Scientist (m/w/d) serves as a key point of contact to support and consult on Momentive’s Intellectual Property (IP) information and process management. Furthermore, the Advanced IP Scientist (m/w/d) supports generating strategic IP insights for European market. The incumbent (m/w/d) will engage in liaising with inventors, IP Team and outside counsels to facilitate creation and maintenance of Intellectual Property rights. This position will report to Senior IP Scientist based in Leverkusen.

Responsibilities Include:

1. IP information and process management:

• Use IP Management (IPM) tool for collaborative invention reviews and provide training for using the tool, utilize the IPM tool for facilitating patent filing and patent life cycle management
• Responsible for responses to patent office actions in collaboration with inventors and communicating directly with external patent law firms
• Track the patent office actions for MPM GmbH for response deadlines and timely information of the inventors within Europe and the corresponding IP team member incl. Paralegal
• Collaborate with IP Legal team members for European Patents/US filing, Patent Cooperation Treaty filing, and obtain PoA forms from the outside counsel
• Organise IP reviews with relevant stakeholders utilizing the information from the IPM tool
• Responsible for reviewing Legal tracker invoices from Outside Counsels
• Perform review process of patents due for annuity, implement corresponding review decisions and follow up with German inventors

2. Support inventors, Technologists and supporting functions at MPM GmbH:

• Disseminate information on progress and grant of patents of inventors within Europe
• Manage inventor awards and support for inventor fees. This includes:
  • update the database of new inventors and retired employees, including contact addresses
  • obtain the sales information at MPM from finance team as basis of inventor fee calculation, and record inventor shares
  • respond to inquiries from the Finance team regarding patent expenditures
  • collaborate with HR/Payroll team to process inventor awards timely
  • update patent status information (active/discontinued patent status, new products) for inventor fees calculation
• Furnish patent related information to inventors, as and when required
• Support the Technologists at Leverkusen with non patent literature and patent documents (including foreign patent documents)

3. Patent Search and Analysis:

• Perform patent search and analysis (patentability, landscape analysis) in patent databases for MPM GmbH projects
• Provide strategic IP insights on Technologies having commercial opportunities in the European region

Qualifications:

The following are required for the role

• Master of Science in Chemistry or Polymer Science

• Several years (at least 5 years) of experience in an Intellectual Property function in a corporate or law firm

• Good knowledge of IP laws and its application to Technology

• Experienced with IP Management Tools e.g. IP Folio

• Experienced in patent search

• Structured way of working with a solution-oriented and problem-solving mindset

• Commitment to continuously learn on-the-job and off-the-job and extend own knowledge

• Strong communication and presentation skills

• Embraces international and cross-functional collaboration

• Proficient in MS365 applications e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.

• Fluent in German (written & oral) and good English skills (written & oral)

The following are preferred for the role

• European Qualifying Examination (EQE)

• SAP/Legal tracker (tracking system for invoices for patent matters)
