Job Description Summary:

The Advanced Endoscopy Fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology will perform advanced therapeutic and interventional endoscopic procedures while gaining experience in academic teaching and research. The position allows the fellow to develop expertise in complex endoscopic procedures, participate in research protocol development, and contribute to scholarly activity. The fellow will also provide supervision and instruction to medical students, residents, and fellows in clinical and procedural settings.

Job Description:

Job Duties:

  • Perform advanced therapeutic and interventional endoscopic procedures, including ERCP, sphincterotomy, stone extraction, lithotripsy, stricture dilation, stent placement, and sphincter of Oddi manometry

  • Perform endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) with fine needle aspiration, core biopsy, celiac plexus neurolysis and nerve blocks, malignancy staging, and management of complex esophageal structures

  • Perform endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and ablation, and stent placement in the esophagus, duodenum, and colon

  • Serve as attending of record for general endoscopy sessions in inpatient or outpatient facilities (approximately 52 sessions per year)

  • Participate in ongoing research projects and scholarly activity, including manuscript preparation and presentation of research findings at local, national, or international conferences

  • Develop skills in research protocol design, abstract writing, and other scholarly activities

  • Supervise and teach fellows, residents, and medical students in procedural and clinical care, including case presentations and teaching conferences

  • Maintain clinical productivity consistent with benchmarks (e.g., MGMA WRVU 50th percentile)

Required Qualifications:

Education: MD or equivalent degree from an accredited medical program.

  • This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position.  The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Certifications/Licenses: Board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Work Experience:

  • Completion of a standard three-year GI fellowship.
  • Experience in general routine endoscopic procedure.

Preferred Qualifications:

Work Experience:

  • Experience with advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedures beyond standard fellowship training.

  • Teaching or mentoring experience in an academic medical setting.

  • Experience in clinical research, publications, or quality improvement initiatives.
