Admin/Paralegal – 6- 9 month secondment/ contract

Home Worker - GBR Full time

This role will provide dedicated trade mark paralegal support to GSK’s trade mark portfolios. You will be responsible for a full range of trade mark activities including searching and clearance, analysis of watch notices, filing and prosecution of applications, oppositions, conflict management and due diligence. You will work closely with trade mark lawyers, paralegals and external counsel to protect and manage brands across multiple jurisdictions.

Key responsibilities

  • Management of an assigned global trade mark portfolio for a business sector, unit or therapy area.
  • Reciprocal responsibility for a US/UK trade mark portfolio depending on location.
  • Prepare documents and filings for lawyer review including trade mark applications filed directly through UKIPO, USPTO and WIPO or through external counsel, as appropriate, and notices of opposition together with management and docketing of key deadlines. Including considering appropriate strategy for use of international filing systems.
  • Review watch notices, and complete research to assess the impact of 3rd party marks and make recommendations to the lawyer on proposed course of action.
  • On instruction from lawyer, coordinate foreign trade mark searches, assess results from external counsel and where required prepare search reports for review by lawyer.
  • Working with external counsel and lawyer, request searches, and instruct filing of applications including agreeing as to specifications, and prosecuting applications including responding to basic Office Actions. Maintaining records in Anaqua for such filings and agreements relating to any  applications/registrations.
  • As required by lawyer, use online tools to provide information on trade mark use or use of 3rd party marks.
  • Working with lawyer and external counsel, instruct oppositions and cancellation actions including exercising judgment in collating evidence to support the action and review draft pleadings for oppositions, cancellations and infringement actions. Prepare draft prior rights and co-existence agreements. Create and maintain records in Anaqua relating to any conflicts, agreements or business development activity.
  • Correspond with and advise business clients regarding a broad range of trade mark issues including status of trade marks, trade mark conflicts and trade mark ownership statements.
  • Management of all deadlines and tasks relating to the assigned portfolio, including, indexing correspondence and documents, and creating and maintaining records and tasks in Anaqua.
  • Work collaboratively with trade mark lawyers and paralegals within the team and colleagues in Legal.

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Secondary/High school education or equivalent is required, formal paralegal training/certificate is preferred
  • Experience working as a trade mark prosecution paralegal or comparable position with experience working in a private practice or in-house legal environment.
  • Strong understanding of EU/U.S. and international trade mark procedures.
  • Excellent IT skills (Windows, Excel, Adobe) and ability to use database management systems.   
  • Familiarity with Anaqua docketing software and IP research tools.
  • Must be well-organised and able to handle an extensive workload and cope with ever increasing changes, multiple deliverables, and deadlines, while maintaining a calm and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work and deliver on tight timelines whilst maintaining a focus on quality.  
  • Excellent attention to detail, with strong capability for problem solving, analysis, judgment, and reasoning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good communication (written and verbal).  Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate proactively with internal teams and external partners.
  • The ability to engage and interact effectively with a diverse team, build strong partnerships, and develop relationships that enable honest and open conversations.
