Job Description:

Reporting to the Commercial Automobile Product and Underwriting Strategy Senior Manager, the Actuarial Specialist will be a key contributor to the development and implementation of product and underwriting strategies to deliver premium and earnings goals and contribute to overall business objectives.  This is an individual contributor role with enterprise influence, partnering closely with Product, Underwriting, and Operations to drive strategy and execution.

Key Responsibilities

Product Management and Underwriting Strategy

  • Drive product management and underwriting strategy initiatives for Commercial Automobile Insurance, including evolving the product suite, optimizing underwriting levers, monitoring performance, identifying areas of opportunity and developing recommendations to ensure growth, profitability and legendary customer experience for Commercial Automobile.
  • Optimize underwriting rules and processes, with an emphasis on straight-through processing while being consistent with organizational risk appetite.
  • Develop and implement new products in Commercial Automobile to meet customer needs while staying in line with overall business objectives, risk appetite and regulatory changes. Includes new products offerings, endorsements and eligibility.
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives as a subject matter expert to help provide guidance for complex situations and to identify risk.

Portfolio Analysis and Monitoring

  • Evaluate and own business cases and proposals for underwriting and product management initiatives.  Socialize business proposals to stakeholders, including executive audiences.
  • Own end‑to‑end analytical deliverables from extracting and preparing data, applying statistics and analytics, supplementing with business acumen to translate data into meaningful insights.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and adjust product offering and underwriting levers based on risk appetite, competitive market, and profitability.
  • Quantify expected benefits and track realized outcomes for initiatives and projects.
  • Translate complex analyses into clear insights and recommendations tailored to technical and executive audiences.
  • Leverage market intelligence information on industry emerging trends, competitors and market information to support strategic decision-making.
  • Lead, motivate and develop relationships with internal and external business partners and stakeholders to develop productive working relationships to identify areas of opportunity and build solutions for growth.  Stakeholders including but not limited to UW Operations, Pricing, Acquisition, Business Enablement teams, and Personal Lines Products, Underwriting Strategy and Analytics Teams.
  • Promote an in-depth understanding of Commercial Automobile products and customer segments, customer needs, competitive landscape and industry trends across the organization.
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation to enhance product offering and underwriting capabilities and align with business goals.
  • Maintain a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes in alignment with risk appetite.

Experience & Education

  • More than seven years of actuarial experience in Property & Casualty Insurance.
  • Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation obtained or in progress.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Sciences or a related field.
  • General Insurance Product, Pricing and Underwriting experience is an asset.
  • Commercial insurance knowledge is beneficial.
  • Proficient in Excel.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, R.
  • Analytical mindset to quantify and solve business problems, uses sophisticated analytical thought process and to exercise judgement and identify solutions.
  • Strong financial acumen, and ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise, actionable summaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate analytics into product and underwriting decisions to drive meaningful outcomes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make fact-based recommendations in a timely manner.
  • Strong organization skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Leadership qualities and strong teamwork skills.
  • Client-focused with solid organizational and communication skills.
  • Autonomous, perseverant, and demonstrate initiative and creativity.
  • Recognized for thoroughness and quality of work.
