We are looking for an Accounting Manager to oversee and review payroll-related accounting activities across Remitly's global entities. Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Accounting, this individual contributor role will be responsible for reviewing payroll journal entries across multiple countries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with local and US GAAP requirements, and serving as the subject matter expert on the accounting treatment for payroll, benefits, taxes, and PTO. You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Payroll Operations, FP&A, Benefits, Tax, Legal, and HR to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.

You Will:
 

Payroll Accounting & Close Management

  • Review and approve journal entries across multiple international jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable accounting standards.

  • Have understanding of key accounting concepts including accrual basis accounting .

  • Serve as the primary accounting subject matter expert for payroll and other key related areas including employee benefits, payroll taxes, and PTO.

  • Conduct technical accounting research and prepare documentation on new payroll related topics to ensure proper accounting treatment is being applied.

  • Ensure proper accounting treatment for country-specific payroll structures, statutory benefits, and tax obligations.

  • Prepare and support monthly and quarterly flux analyses on related accounts, providing clear explanations of variances to finance leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Review balance sheet reconciliations, identifying and resolving variances in a timely manner.
     

Internal Controls & SOX Compliance

  • Monitor and maintain a robust controls framework around the payroll accounting  process, ensuring Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance.

  • Ensure internal controls, policies, and procedures are properly designed, documented, and consistently followed to drive continuous strengthening of the company’s control environment to support Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance.

  • Perform process and control reviews and partner with stakeholders to remediate control gaps.
     

External Audit & Financial Reporting

  • Respond to and manage audit requests, including preparation of supporting documentation and coordination with external auditors.

  • Support financial reporting requests from internal stakeholders, ensuring data is accurate, well-documented, and delivered on time.
     

Process Improvement, Automation & Systems

  • Actively identify and implement automation opportunities across the payroll accounting cycle, leveraging AI and modern tooling to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy and scalability.

  • Analyze current accounting workflows and lead initiatives to enhance efficiency and scalability.

  • Lead or participate from a payroll perspective in cross-functional projects including ERP optimization, system implementations, or accounting policy changes.

  • Build scalable processes that reduce manual intervention and eliminate operational dependencies.
     

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Payroll Operations, FP&A, Benefits, and HR to understand changes in compensation programs, benefit plans, and headcount that impact the general ledger.

  • Work effectively with stakeholders across teams, regions, and different cultural backgrounds.
     

You Have:
 

Required

  • 6+ years of progressive experience in Accounting, with meaningful exposure to payroll accounting in a multinational or high-growth environment.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and SOX compliance requirements.

  • In-depth understanding of key payroll accounting concepts including wage accruals, employer taxes, benefits accounting, and PTO liability management.

  • Familiarity with country-specific payroll and statutory benefit structures across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Experience working with large-volume journal entry review and general ledger reconciliations.

  • A forward-thinking approach to technology, with demonstrated interest or experience implementing automation or AI tools to improve accounting workflows.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines across a global close calendar.

  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset with an interest in building scalable processes and improving data quality.

  • Exposure to large data sets and familiarity with Excel and/or SQL.
     

Preferred

  • CPA or equivalent certification.

  • Public accounting and/or audit background.

  • Experience working with NetSuite or other ERP systems.

  • Experience in fintech or high-growth environments.
