Summary: The Accounting Manager performs and oversees duties related to monthly accounting for the Hendrick Automotive Group (HAG) parent company and related real estate and holding companies that are incorporated into consolidated financial statements for use by management, bankers and owners.  Additionally, the Accounting Manager will assist with the preparation of the year-end audited financial statements and with the annual budget process.  The Accounting Manager will also work closely with the Controller, Director of Corporate Accounting, VP of Accounting, and other team members to research and implement new accounting guidance and to perform additional tasks as needed.

The Accounting Manager will manage a team of 3-5 staff accountants and will perform general accounting oversight of monthly close activities including, but not limited to, preparation and review of journal entries, review of subsidiaries’ books, review of account reconciliations, as well as the review of consolidated financial statements mentioned above.  This position will perform or oversee the accounting for technical areas such as the implementation of new applicable GAAP pronouncements, acquisition/divestiture accounting, lease accounting, elimination of intercompany activity, etc. and will be involved in special projects such as G/L system implementations and process improvements.  Other general accounting/treasury functions described more fully below are also assigned to this role.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job will have supervisory responsibilities for over 3-5 staff accountants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, and other duties may be assigned:

  • Oversee a team of 3-5 staff accountants, including ensuring their month-end close activity progress is adhering to close calendar, providing oversight of their work and answering their questions, providing performance feedback and conducting annual reviews, etc.  Developing and motivating our team to enable their future growth is key.
  • Assist staff with account reconciliations and review their work with professional skepticism.  Use reconciliations to create adjusting entries and improve processes which led to errors, if necessary.
  • Develop an understanding of Kyriba, our Treasury Management system, and how the data in Kyriba is used to generate the majority of our entries related to cash and debt payment activity. 
  • Monitor changes to the Company’s outstanding debt obligations and ensure that Kyriba and our long-term debt reporting has been updated accordingly.
  • First level review of monthly trial balance and secondary review of financial statements to identify issues that need to be corrected prior to closing books for the month.   Detail orientation is critical to the successful management of this process.
  • Research unusual transactions and new accounting guidance to ensure proper accounting treatment in accordance with US GAAP and company/department policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the oversight of the year-end audit process and preparation of schedules for our external auditors.
  • Oversee the annual budgeting process.
  • Assist with other general accounting/treasury functions such as check and wire/ACH approval while ensuring that the G/L coding associated with those payments is accurate.
  • Willingness to do whatever it takes to meet deadlines while maintaining high-quality work product.
  • Interact with management and other departments, such as Dealership accounting, Financial Analysis and Tax departments, etc.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reporting requests, analyses, and special projects as requested by management
  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvement and standardization and take ownership of implementing those changes.

Technical Expertise:

Has a minimum of 6 busy seasons of public accounting plus 3 or more years of large company industry experience (preferred) OR a minimum of 9-10 busy seasons with a large public accounting firm.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions. Ability to interpret financial reports and spreadsheets.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and proficiency in MS Office, specifically MS Excel.  Preference for candidates with experience with Microsoft Dynamics SL (Solomon), Microsoft Dynamics 365 and HFM or OneStream experience.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Communication Skills:

Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to communicate effectively with company personnel, financial institution personnel, and external auditors.

Attendance Expectations:

The position requires regular and predictable attendance.  Hours may include evening hours, weekends, and some holidays to meet required deadlines, particularly at year-end and other key times.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and sit; use hands to finger, handle, and feel.

Environment Demands:

Duties are performed primarily at a desk in an office environment but will also be required to work throughout the facility.  Work includes frequent clerical and administrative assignments and interaction with office, employees, and company personnel.

Verbal and Writing Ability:

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and other employees.
