Academic Support Coordinator, Tutoring Services

The Academic Support Coordinator, Tutoring Services supports student success by coordinating peer-based academic support programs within the Center for Academic Achievement. This role oversees daily tutoring operations and is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and developing student peer tutors. The Tutoring Services Coordinator partners with faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders to assess academic support needs and implement responsive, effective tutoring practices that promote student learning, persistence, and academic confidence. This position provides guidance and oversight to student employees and OPS staff.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Designs and delivers initial and ongoing tutor training focused on learning strategies, academic support, and tutoring best practices for large-scale peer tutoring programming.
  • Supervises and manages the day-to-day operations of peer tutoring programs and services including recruiting, hiring, training of student peer tutors, creating/maintaining tutoring schedules, and timesheet approvals for student employees.
  • Guides the professional development of peer tutors through conducting observations/feedback, supporting ongoing skill development, and performance improvement.
  • Maintains and optimizes tutoring systems for scheduling, attendance tracking, and reporting.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and service standards aligned with institutional goals and student needs.
  • Partners with faculty and academic departments to align tutoring services with course expectations and student learning outcomes.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to identify academic support needs and improve services.
  • Collects and analyzes data reports based on service usage and student learning outcomes to provide recommendations on improvements to services.
  • Develops and implements program evaluations to assess effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Uses data and feedback to inform service enhancements and program planning.
  • Assists with budget tracking and provide input on program-related expenditures.
  • Contributes to departmental planning, goal setting, and institutional effectiveness efforts.
  • Represents Tutoring Services and the Center at campus events, committees, and student success initiatives.
  • Ensures compliance with institutional policies, including FERPA and ethical standards.
  • Participates in professional development and remains current on best practices in academic support and peer learning.
  • Oversees the work of lower-level personnel and/or student employees in assigned area. Supervises part-time academic support assistants.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education, Education, Learning Sciences, or related field.
  • Experience in tutoring, academic support, or peer education programs.
  • Experience implementing and assessing academic or co-curricular programs.
  • Experience working with student employees or peer leaders.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply pedagogical principles to the design, delivery, and evaluation of tutoring services and tutor training.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the position.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to FERPA requirements.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to coordinate and guide student and temporary staff to ensure effective tutoring services.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, apply, and explain personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze data and use insights to improve programs and services.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently to complete assignments.
