Provide intentional, supportive advising and personal development counseling for SSS participants as required by TRIO legislation. Will work with students from one of three SSS grants: SSS regular, SSS Teacher Preparation, and/or SSS Disabilities. Assist students with development of academic skills, non-cognitive and life skills necessary for college and life after college. Ensure participation that enhances higher education experiences, often missed by SSS-eligible students, leading to the completion of a baccalaureate and successful career engagement. Utilize best practices in counseling, advising, and programming delivered to SSS students. Assist with recruiting of SSS participants, and program services including but not limited to cultural events, financial and economic literacy workshops, liaising with other LSU Departments - particularly career services and the Student Financial Management Center. Provide supportive assistance for the Ready, Set, Geaux Bootcamp and research best practices for counseling, advising, trauma informed assistance, and transition planning. Maintain basic knowledge of TRIO legislation and regulations and attend trainings as assigned.
60% Student Support
Manage identified student caseload ensuring delivery of services specified in the SSS grant. Monitor academic progress of assigned participants and ensure all students in cohort are contacted for necessary services. Provide academic, financial (federal programs and financial literacy information), and non-cognitive skill development as indicated in the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended. Provides personal support for SSS participants who are struggling with the transition to college.
Provide educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses, and determining appropriate education solutions for students. Assist participants with GPA calculations, identifying and understanding quality point deficits; transfer evaluations; Allied Health/Premed/dental advising; interacting with and referral to other LSU offices, as appropriate. Conduct Student Action Strategies (SAS) each semester for assigned students (specifically Freshmen and any students on academic warning or probation). Assist students with development of SMART goal setting. Provide assistance with resumes; recommendation letters; and scholarship, graduate school and job applications.
Provide case management to students who do not meet their educational requirements and offers guidance toward other possible academic programs. Assist students with identification and implementation of academic and life skills necessary for the successful navigation of the university academic and social arenas leading to graduation. Serve as the conduit for students in interpreting and enforcing the many university policies and procedures that students encounter. Utilize the various electronic and print-based materials, as well as the multiple university databases to interpret the various LSU degree programs. Record contacts in the LSU Navigate system and SSS APR database systems.
25% Training & Evaluation
Participate in job searches and development of new employees, as assigned. Develop and provide training to new SSS professional staff members regarding TRIO and SSS information as it relates to their positions. Work with the SSS Director and other SSS Staff to evaluate the effectiveness of SSS programming utilizing the formative and summative measures established in the grant application. Attend conferences and trainings as assigned by the SSS Director.
15% Programming
Serve as one of the Recitation leaders for the SSS 1001 class. Coordinate the development and delivery of financial literacy programming and ensure SSS participants have multiple opportunities to learn responsible money management skills. Coordinate cultural and community engagement opportunities - focusing on increased cultural development as described in the grant application. Coordinate peer mentoring and student leadership programming. Other duties as assigned by EMSS leadership.
