Summary
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences assigns academic advisors to five curriculum-based advising units: Biological & Physical Sciences, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, and Open Option. Advisors serve as integral members of their unit’s team and may advise students across multiple majors within the unit or college.
The college is seeking one Academic Advisor II for the Open Option advising unit. This position will advise still exploring or Open Option students in the college. They may advise students from another unit, in particular degree program(s) to assist with student growth areas in the college. The advisor might be utilized as a resource to pre-professional students in the college and across campus.
Successful candidates will:
Prioritize a student-centered approach to advising and thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Have experience advising, teaching, or counseling students from a variety of backgrounds in both one-on-one and group settings.
Demonstrate strong communication, organization, leadership, and time management skills.
Key Responsibilities
Advise students on academic exploration and planning, degree requirements, university policies, and graduation progress.
Connect students to relevant campus resources such as counseling services, academic support, financial aid, and faculty mentorship.
Support or coordinate a learning community, which may include hiring, training, and supervising peer mentors and teaching an orientation or student success course.
Participate in recruitment and orientation activities including individual and group visits, emails, phone calls, and academic program sessions.
Assist students in developing career goals in collaboration with faculty and career services professionals.
Contribute to college-wide student success and retention initiatives.
Serve on departmental committees, including in an advisory capacity to curriculum committees.

• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals
• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems
• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests
• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff
• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity
• Provides guidance to students
