The Opportunity:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented 3D CAD/CAM Designer to support the Advanced Manufacturing Program for long lead time and obsolete parts at SRF-JRMC Yokosuka, Japan. This critical role will assist in overcoming supply chain challenges by providing technical design expertise for reverse engineering and fabrication of components using cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. The 3D CAD/CAM Designer will work closely with the Advanced Manufacturing Program Manager to develop detailed technical drawings, 3D models, and manufacturing specifications for critical naval components. The successful candidate will apply naval engineering and mechanical standards to create designs that meet rigorous performance requirements while ensuring compliance with Navy technical specifications. This position offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute directly to fleet readiness by applying advanced design techniques to solve critical part obsolescence challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform ship checks to investigate, measure, and document existing machinery, equipment, and structures requiring part fabrication or replacement
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D technical drawings of parts and components using AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, and other CAD/CAM software to support the Advanced Manufacturing Program
  • Develop design products including Engineering Liaison Memorandum (ELM), NAVSEA drawings, and various design sketches that illustrate technical instructions for part fabrication
  • Research various drawings and technical documents such as Ship's Installation Drawing (SID), STD drawings, General Specification of Overhaul (GSO), and Naval Ships Technical Manual (NSTM) to verify original configurations and applicable specifications
  • Perform technical calculations for stress load, structural strength, fluid flow rate, and other engineering parameters to ensure designed parts meet performance requirements
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to understand technical requirements and develop appropriate design solutions for long lead time and obsolete parts
  • Support reverse engineering efforts by developing accurate 3D models from physical components, measurements, or incomplete technical data
  • Participate in technical review processes to verify designs meet all Navy specifications and performance requirements
  • Assist with quality control planning, testing protocols, and acceptance criteria for fabricated parts
  • Provide technical support during parts fabrication to resolve any design-related issues that arise during manufacturing

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Active Secret Security Clearance
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, design technology, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical drafting and design work, preferably in a maritime or defense environment
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and 3D modeling software
  • Experience with developing technical drawings according to engineering specifications
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, particularly related to naval systems
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with engineers and technical personnel

Desired:

  • Experience with ship systems, particularly propulsion machinery, hull structures, or auxiliary systems
  • Knowledge of advanced manufacturing technologies (Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing, CNC machining)
  • Experience with reverse engineering methodologies
  • Familiarity with Navy technical documentation systems
  • Background in US Naval Shipyard or Regional Maintenance Center operations
  • Experience with digital twin concepts and applications
  • Understanding of parts qualification and testing procedures in regulated industries
  • Experience with various inspection techniques for mechanical components
