Location/Hours:

  • All candidates must be within commutable distance of SEO’s offices at 55 Exchange Place, New York, NY 10005, upon hire.
  • This is a full-time, exempt position with a hybrid schedule requiring in-person work three days a week (including required Saturdays) and virtual work two days a week. The typical weekly schedule is as follows:
    • Fall Term: Tuesday through Saturday (3x a month); Monday through Friday (1x month)
    • Spring Term: Tuesday through Saturday (3x a month); Monday through Friday (1x month)
    • Summer Term: Monday through Friday
  • In-person attendance is required for all Saturday programming dates.
  • Work requires local travel beyond the office for Saturday programming at the following locations (subject to change):
    • Long Island University
    • Baruch College

ABOUT SEO

Founded in 1963 during the Civil Rights Movement, SEO closes educational and career opportunity gaps for 7,000 ambitious young people annually.

SEO Scholars is a free, eight-year, academic program that transforms public high school students in New York City, San Francisco, North Carolina, and Miami into college graduates. SEO Scholars successfully educates and mentors students to and through college. 100% of Scholars are accepted into four-year colleges, 85% of Scholars graduate with a Bachelor’s degree, and 80% are first-generation college graduates. POSITION OVERVIEW

SEO Scholars High School Program Managers are essential to the continued success of our Scholars Program. Program Managers are charged with building and maintaining a culture of high achievement and a supportive, family-like community that ultimately drives student performance in the program and high school.

As a 10th Grade Program Manager, you will be responsible for the advisement and performance of a cohort of 80-90 high school sophomores. Through a combination of group facilitated workshops and community circles, class observations, and individual advising, you will help Scholars develop holistically. Beyond ensuring a rigorous academic environment, you will be tasked with creating learning experiences that build Scholars’ academic and socio-emotional foundation to successfully navigate high school, college, and career.

Student Advising & Management

  • In coordination with the 10th grade department, lead and implement SEO Scholars programming on Saturdays, after school, and during the summer for a class of 250+ Scholars (approximately 80 Scholars per cohort).
  • Build and deliver effective lesson plans with clear objectives and alignment to programming goals.
  • Create and nurture an environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, an inclusive, close-knit and supportive community, and a college-going culture.
  • Provide academic advising to all Scholars in their assigned cohort through leading advising hours, conducting meetings for students and parents, and meeting with Scholars 1:1 or in small groups.
  • Consistently set high expectations for all Scholars to adhere to program policies and behavioral standards.
  • Provide socio-emotional guidance, advising, and support to ensure Scholars’ successful completion of the program.
  • Under the guidance of the 10th Grade Assistant Director, develop content and best practices for Scholar advising.
  • Work with 9th and 11th grade staff to transition Scholars into and from the 10th grade each summer.

Administration & Project Planning

  • Manage administrative duties including entering and tracking program data accurately and as necessary in Salesforce database to assess student progress.
  • Develop and manage project plans with clear deliverables, due dates, and dependencies; regularly report progress and roadblocks to manager and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate projects or initiatives that support positive youth development in high school.
  • Adhere to teamwide programming and administrative calendars.

Data Tracking & Analysis 

  • Facilitate weekly instructor check-in meetings to gather information about Scholar performance and collaborate on action plans to support Scholars.
  • Track attendance and assignment completion rates; achieve attendance, retention, and assignment completion goals, and provide timely data to the Assistant Director.
  • Monitor grades in SEO Scholars classes, high school courses, and standardized test scores; use data to drive advising discussions with Scholars.

Program-wide Support

  • Foster and maintain relationships with parents, school partners, volunteers, and corporate partners.
  • Support Scholars and volunteer mentors in building a productive, mutually beneficial relationship.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and supervision of occasional trips (e.g. college tours).
  • Lean into other projects/duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2+ years of high school teaching experience required.
  • Experience working with large groups of high school students.

COMPETENCIES & SKILLS

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to clearly and effectively present content in a public forum, engage in active listening, and command the attention of large groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be practiced in building professional relationships and delivering constructive, honest and productive feedback to Scholars and family members.
  • Strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit that translates into successful accomplishment of program goals
  • Highly adaptable and solutions-oriented with an ability to solve complex problems even when faced with resource limitations
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-orientation, and ability to multitask and handle changing priorities
  • Strong follow-through and accountability able to manage multiple responsibilities while meeting deadlines with minimal reminders
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel and reporting skills with an affinity towards data-driven outcomes.
  • Background working with families and within communities reflective of SEO’s Scholar population with the combined lived and learned experience to effectively apply a genuinely empathic, and inclusive lens to both relationships and work product.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is highly preferred; other languages skills are welcome.
