Senior Backend Engineer, Infrastructure

Berlin Full Time

ABOUT TALON.ONE:

Talon. One is the most powerful incentives engine that unifies loyalty, promotions and gamification into one holistic platform. Backed by enterprise-grade security and scalability, Talon. One empowers companies to build personalized, profitable promotions and loyalty programs using any data.

Today, over 250 of the world’s most-loved brands including Adidas, Sephora and Carlsberg work with Talon. One to drive deeper engagement and lasting loyalty with their customers.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We’re looking for a Senior  Backend Engineer, Infrastructure, to join Talon. One and help us move faster on prototypes and experiments.

This isn’t about polished, production-ready code—it’s about validating ideas, testing gut feelings, and exploring new opportunities. Most experiments will never see the light of day (and that’s okay), but the few that do will make a big impact.

You’ll work closely on the Talon in-store solution, which involves running a local version of Talon One in-store for offline functionality and performance efficiency, with you focusing on validation and prototyping the idea, particularly the synchronization and reconciliation processes, with the Product Manager assisting in scoping and validation.

ONCE YOU ARE HERE YOU WILL:

  • Lead the validation and prototyping of Talon. One’s new In-Store solution, an on-premise deployment of Talon. One designed to operate autonomously during connectivity outages and support high-volume retail environments
  • Design and build a local offline-capable instance of Talon. One that runs in retail stores, ensuring uninterrupted promotion execution and ultra-fast performance for item scanning and cart updates
  • Own the synchronization and reconciliation mechanisms that allow the in-store instance to seamlessly rejoin the cloud environment once connectivity is restored
  • Collaborate closely with Lucas and other senior engineers to scope the technical approach, validate the architecture with potential customers, and iterate based on real-world requirements
  • Prototype quickly and autonomously, delivering a working proof-of-concept to showcase to enterprise retailers
  • Work deeply across backend and infrastructure domains, including Kubernetes orchestration, distributed systems behavior, and on-premise deployment considerations (monitoring, SLAs, operability)
  • Contribute to and extend the existing Go-based Talon. One codebase, ensuring compatibility with cloud components and production readiness of the offline prototype
  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to refine requirements, plan technical milestones, and shape the long-term vision of the In-Store solution
  • Prepare the foundation for a future squad—if the prototype succeeds, you will act as the technical lead as the project scales into a dedicated team

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO BRING TO THE TABLE:

  • Strong Kubernetes and DevOps expertise, with hands-on experience operating and maintaining distributed systems
  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally with Go or a strong willingness to work in Go
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt quickly, shift priorities, and thrive in an agile environment
  • Curious, creative, and comfortable experimenting to validate new ideas and approaches
  • Collaborative mindset with a preference for working closely with others to exchange ideas and iterate fast
  • Experience building APIs, integrations, or developer-focused tools
  • Previous experience with on-premise or hybrid software deployments

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU:
  • Work at the edge of experimentation—your job is literally to explore the unknown
  • A Research and Development Department of 90+ of engineers, product managers and product designers in Berlin
  • Leaders with 8+ years of experience building our promotions engine
  • €1,000 annual learning budget, full LinkedIn Learning access, and free German language courses to boost your skills
  • 30 days of annual leave, plus extra paid days for your birthday and moving day
  • Home office setup budget, a monthly home office allowance
  • Freedom to work from abroad for up to 90 days worldwide!
  • Mental health support with nilo.health and a discounted Urban Sports Club membership
  • 20% company subsidy on your pension contributions
  • Subsidised BVG public transport ticket and a dog-friendly Berlin office where your furry friend is welcome
  • Lease your ideal bike through BusinessBike
