ICF

Wetland Scientist/Field Biologist – Part-time (hourly)

Austin, TX Part time

ICF’s Environment & Planning Division is seeking a motivated On-Call Wetland Scientist/Field Biologist to join our Texas-based environmental consulting team. In this role, you will:

  • Help our clients solve their toughest environmental regulatory challenges, with a focus on delivering exceptional work and rigorous analysis.
  • Support interdisciplinary teams of wetland scientists, biologists, ecologists, and regulatory specialists—to develop strong, defensible findings for client questions.
  • Develop a wide range of experience while assisting in the completion of a variety of wetland and/or biological fieldwork projects throughout Texas and the region.
  • Gain exposure to protected species surveys, habitat and water resources assessments, and Waters of the U.S. delineations for a variety of energy, transportation, water, and other infrastructure projects.
  • Collaborate with project managers, technical experts, and regulatory agencies to successfully deliver projects on time with high quality standards.
  • Leverage your curiosity and agility to tackle today’s challenges and offer consistency and accountability in project delivery.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist with wetland delineations, endangered species habitat assessments, and other support fieldwork activities.
  • Be a positive, fun, curious, organized, self-motivated and supportive addition to our team.
  • Be available and enthusiastic to travel as needed for project locations throughout Texas and the region. Travel requirements are variable, however ICF strives to work with all staff to develop mutually agreed-upon fieldwork schedules. Driving is typically required to reach remote job sites.
  • Provide expertise and technical input to project managers on projects involving Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, federal and state laws, and agency consultations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Biology, Natural Resource Sciences, Wetland Science, Wildlife, Ecology, Botany, Forest, Environmental Sciences, or a similar field; OR High School Diploma with 2+ years of professional experience within field biology, wetland delineations, or related experience.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check.
  • Must be able to work independently in the field for extended periods of time, often with limited mobile phone reception.
  • Must be able to traverse uneven, irregular, slippery, and steep terrain (up to 5 miles per day) with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to navigate using physical maps and handheld GPS units.

Preferred Qualifications and Attributes:

  • Prior experience with water resources, biological, and ecological fieldwork in Texas.
  • Understanding of the Clean Water Act and prior experience delineating Waters of the U.S.
  • Certification as a Certified Wildlife Biologist (CWB) and/or Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) a plus.
  • USFWS Section 10 recovery permit for conducting protected species surveys a plus.
  • Demonstrable experience writing detailed technical reports (e.g., Water Resources and Habitat Assessments, Environmental Resources Assessments, Critical Issues Analysis, etc.)

Fieldwork is often performed on foot in rugged terrain and the ability to traverse long distances is required. The fieldwork will often require long hours in potentially adverse weather conditions. Fieldwork will be conducted in remote areas with the potential for overnight/extended travel. You may be required to work independently in the field, so dedication, resourcefulness, and accountability are essential skills for the position. While some fieldwork will be conducted independently, all work will be carried out as part of larger team effort and excellent communication skills and an ability to cooperate in a team are equally important qualities.

About On-Call Employment with ICF:
Given the seasonal or project-specific nature of our environmental work, ICF often hires environmental professionals as “On-Call” employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work hours as they become available (we usually schedule work hours a few weeks ahead of time), and each on-call employee is free to accept or refuse the hours assigned to them in a given week. On-Call employees may work concurrent projects outside of their ICF assignment (as long as their outside work does not create a conflict of interest with the work they do for ICF). Work is expected to occur in Texas and potentially in adjoining states.
