Job Summary

The Voice Communication System (VCS) Automation Engineer works under the general guidance of the Engineering Systems Specialists. Work involves: (a) planning and performing studies/medium-level projects assisted by technical support staff, or engineering work as part of a project; or (b) planning and performing applied research, development, or innovative design work in engineering specialty and carrying out experiments and tests.

The VCS Automation Engineer is accountable for applying specialized knowledge and expertise in preparing plans for the development of capital projects; completing system designs and specifications to meet specific operational requirements; support procurement and implementation activities; assist with life cycle management of the voice communications systems and equipment. The VCS Automation Engineer will support the development and implementation of automated test tools as a member of a team of engineers, including audio and signaling in the analog and digital domains, and interactions with system management and user interfaces.

Key Accountabilities:

The VCS Automation Engineer is accountable to actively develop his/her knowledge and experience base in the Specialty area by actively seeking out challenging assignments, enthusiastically participating in learning opportunities, and maintaining professional development requirements. As expertise and knowledge increase, the Engineering Specialist will be expected to be responsible for more complex assignments and be more active in providing engineering advice to other NAV CANADA groups.

Education:

  • Graduation with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in electrical, electronics, communications or computer engineering

Experience:

  • 3-5 years experience as an engineer including practical and project related work

  • Experience in the planning, design and/or implementation of IT communication technologies and complex systems projects

  • Experience in the development of specifications, standards and procedures

  • Experience in the planning, design and/or implementation of hardware / software projects

  • Experience in Test Automation, including analog/digital instrument automation and software automation

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, practices and technology in the field of voice communications, data communications and computer systems

  • A working knowledge of project management principles and techniques, system engineering process and practices, business practices and decision-making techniques

  • Knowledge in IP networking and VoIP communication

  • Knowledge with software pipelines automation (Ansible, Gitlab, Jenkins)

  • Knowledge in IT system administration principles

Abilities:

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to organize and conduct studies

  • Ability in written and oral communications relating to specifications and technical documents for Technical Managers, Senior Engineers and technologists

  • Ability to plan and organize tasks and projects using industry best practices

  • Consistent and meticulous

Flexible work arrangements:

  • This is a hybrid position with a minimum of 3 days per week on site required
