Thesis work: Develop battery powered fan type side collect kit for ride-on lawn mowers

Huskvarna Part time

We are now looking for students within mechanical engineering that are interested in doing their thesis project at our Wheeled Department.

During spring 2025, a thesis project was conducted that resulted in increased understanding and improved subcomponents at a prototype stage. This thesis aims to further develop one of the concepts into an almost finished product that could be industrialized. Collecting grass in a rear-mounted fabric container during mowing using only the airflow from the cutting blades is difficult. Adding a blow/suction unit in the right place significantly increases performance. This thesis is about finding the parameters for exactly how and where the extra airflow should be added to achieve maximum effect, as well as optimizing airflow versus battery life.

Husqvarna’s CAE Department will support along the way with simulations, but geometries and some input data should come from the thesis work. In the final phase, these simulations should be verified with practical air measurements and mowing exercises.

The concept(s) should be built using Husqvarna’s currently available electronics and one of the three available battery systems: 18V, 36V, or 48V. This will involve new construction, so good knowledge of any CAD system (Husqvarna Wheeled uses Catia) and a sense of design are desirable.

Husqvarna Offers and Provides Access to the Following During the Thesis:

  • Work clothes and protective clothing
  • Product training
  • Internal training within the subject
  • Husqvarna’s design guidelines
  • Interviews with relevant people within the company
  • Insight into previous testing both in Sweden and other countries
  • Competitor analysis
  • Flexible workspace at Wheeled Lab
  • Workbench as needed at Wheeled Lab
  • Manufacturing of parts at Wheeled Lab and the Experimental Workshop
  • Vans for travel and transport of products
  • Possible business trip with overnight stay in April in the south of Sweden for concept verification

Limitations:

  • Primarily use existing Husqvarna hardware and software.
  • Minimal support from R&D electric regarding modification of hardware or software.

Expected Goals:

  • At least one concept that can be practically demonstrated on a lawn at the end of May.
  • Good collaboration with the Calculation Department for better-designed simulations and several test mowings to correlate with simulation data during April and May.
  • Participate in Husqvarna’s final presentation for this year’s thesis projects with a 15-minute presentation in English.

Proper area of education:
Bachelor / Master in mechanical engineering or any other relevant field.

How to apply :
