The New York Times is looking for a dynamic news reporter to produce scoops and revelatory stories about Texas. You are a self-starter who is hungry to drive the conversation about the region. You will come brimming with ideas for engaging stories in a variety of formats that help to explain and visualize this complex state for our readers – whether they are in Texas, across the country, or around the world.

You have a clear record of producing exclusives and an ability to write with authority. You should embrace a true range of stories and turnaround times, from breaking news on major events to deep enterprise on the trends shaping the state. You see news moments as opportunities to show off your expertise through clear and vivid writing. You are collaborative with colleagues.

This position is based in Texas and may require attendance in the office. This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

Responsibilities:

  • You will cultivate a deep bench of sources across a range of topics to drive scoops and power news coverage.
  • You will write with authority, clarity, and precision, independently and on deadline.
  • You will translate the complex issues, trends, and culture of Texas for a national and global audience.
  • You will monitor news and deliver a steady stream of story ideas that help explain the region.
  • You will produce exclusive stories that demonstrate beat authority and a deep understanding of the state.
  • You will collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom, including those based in Texas and on other desks.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Texas Editor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization.
  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment.
  • A portfolio that includes breaking news, enterprise, visual story formats and analysis across a range of subjects.
  • Experience, lived or reporting, in Texas.
  • You are enthusiastic about new storytelling approaches and have a proven track record of finding new ways to engage readers (e.g., visual storytelling, multimedia collaboration).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to conversationally explain reporting on camera.
  • Spanish language fluency

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$113,270.67$125,000 USD
