Job Title: Technical Lead – Atmosphere Management and Radiation Monitoring - Submarines

Working location: Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria  

We are currently recruiting for a Technical Lead – Atmosphere Management and Radiation Monitoring – Submarines to join our Rolls-Royce Submarines team based in Barrow.

To provide Submarine Class Engineering Assurance, through change and configuration management, that the design and as-built Atmosphere management and Radiation monitoring systems integrated into Dreadnought Class submarines meet the requirements and needs of the Submarine Delivery Agency and the end user; the Royal Navy. These assurance activities are conducted through a range of engagements with ship builder, suppliers and MoD agencies together with direct interrogation of documentation and personal surveillance of product, to enable a full assessment of the product through the design, manufacture and commissioning stages before delivery into service.

The candidate will have a desire to work closely with the product and engage in regular on-site assurance activities. The candidate will be self-driven and seek their own opportunities to explore and review wider areas of the submarine design.

What you will be doing: 

The Dreadnought Alliance (DNA) is a collaboration between the Ministry of Defence (MoD), BAE Systems, and Rolls-Royce. Within the Alliance, the Submarine Systems (SubSys) team operates under the leadership of the Engineering Systems Owner (ESO).

We are seeking a Technical Lead to join the Survival Systems Group, which is managed by the Group Manager – Survival. This group is responsible for a range of critical systems, including Fire Fighting, Survival and Escape, Air Purification and Monitoring, and Radiation Monitoring. One Technical Lead, employed by BAE Systems, currently oversees part of these systems; this advertised role will take responsibility for the remaining systems within the group.

Upon joining the Alliance, you will receive a comprehensive familiarisation with the Submarine (SM) production environment and gain an understanding of how DNA operates as a Design Authority. Once familiar with our processes and tools, you will be delegated ownership of your assigned systems, with full support available from the Survival Team and the wider SubSys Team.

Within six months of joining, you will be expected to complete an Oral Board. This process provides a structured framework—complete with guidance and reference materials—to help you consolidate your knowledge of the Dreadnought Programme and the Alliance’s engineering processes.

The candidate will be responsible for advising the SubSys Engineering System Owner on the approval of the design and build acceptance of Atmosphere management systems (including O2 generation, CO2 removal and CO removal) and Radiation monitoring systems integrated into the Dreadnought Class submarines.  Advice will be formulated on assessment made against specified requirements and standards with full cognisance of project time and cost constraints. Working very closely with a variety of stakeholders typical responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Delivery of assurance to the Platform Authority, in line with Dreadnought Alliance technical governance, of the capability and performance of the following systems integrated into the Dreadnought Class design:
    • Atmosphere Analyser and atmosphere monitoring systems
    • Air Particle Detector and Direct Gamma Monitoring System
    • Installed RADIAC System
    • Air Purification System
    • Air Purification Revisionary Systems
  • Technical Problem Solving often coupled with appropriate management planning abilities
  • Production of technical documents in the assessment of system capability or performance
  • Undertaking assessments of supportability and maintainability
  • Provide expert advice and guidance in own technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify risks (candidate can be involved beyond Systems related to the role, if experience is held in other areas personnel are encouraged to help out other Technical Leads).
  • Assessing and advising on system design change, defects, contract requirements and management of hazards
  • Assess and manage Risks and Opportunities
  • Maintaining and, when appropriate, writing systems guidance documents in support of projects and industry
  • Overseeing decisions which will impact the submarine capability in the future including support, future development and maintainability
  • Work with stakeholders from both the Dreadnought Alliance and other organisations including ship builder, project planners and other subject matter experts
  • Ensure the submarine is safe, delivered on time and to budget on behalf of the customer

SDA Civil Service Requirements: 

  • Professionally Registered status or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
  • Member of a relevant Professional Engineering / Science Institute or equivalent body.
  • Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience:
    • certificate of higher education (CertHE)
    • higher apprenticeship
    • higher national certificate (HNC)
    • level 4 award
    • level 4 certificate
    • level 4 diploma
    • level 4 NVQ
  • Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes. Technical experience in their discipline or specialist area in a variety of contexts.
  • Strong knowledge and engineering experience of atmosphere management systems, preferably relating to submarines (ideal but if candidate can demonstrate ability to learn and work from basic principles this is also acceptable).
  • Strong knowledge and engineering experience of radiation monitoring systems preferably relating to submarines (ideal but if candidate can demonstrate ability to learn and work from basic principles this is also acceptable).
  • Awareness of submarine design
  • An understanding of concession management.
  • Awareness of design configuration control.
  • Awareness of Technical Requirements, Evaluation & Acceptance
  • Awareness of quality assurance activities and acceptance processes within maritime build environment.
