Summary:

The System Engineer is responsible for leading the Signaling system design and configuration management activities across complex rail signaling projects. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, safe, and compliant system designs while maintaining rigorous configuration control throughout the project lifecycle. The incumbent will manage requirements, design specifications, audits, and change control processes, acting as a key interface between engineering, safety, software, hardware, and customer teams.

Responsibilities:

  • System Design & Engineering
    • Lead signaling design activities including architecture, modeling, simulation, and trade-off analysis.
    • Translate customer requirements into conceptual and detailed designs.
    • Prepare system, subsystem, and interface specifications.
    • Develop operational concepts and support bids and proposals.
    • Ensure alignment with safety standards and promote a safety-first culture.
    • Act as Work Package Manager, managing budget, schedule, and team assignments.

  • Configuration Management
    • Implement and maintain configuration management systems and plans (CM Planning, Identification, Control, Status Accounting, Verification & Audit).
    • Establish and manage CM baselines (FBL, ABL, PBL) and site configurations.
    • Conduct FCA, PCA, SCA, and software build verifications.
    • Ensure proper use of PLM systems (e.g., Windchill, Palma) and coach team members on CM principles.
    • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure CM compliance.

  • Cross-Functional Leadership
    • Facilitate collaboration between system design, software, hardware, safety, and IVVQ teams.
    • Lead technical discussions and present solutions to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Drive process improvement initiatives across both design and CM domains.

  • Specifies to sub-contractors and suppliers the CM requirements through Statement of Work and ensures the follow up of compliance to those requirements
  • Liaises with other Hitachi Rail unit CM personnel involved in the project as well as with subcontractors/suppliers regarding project CM related issues
  • Contributes to improvement initiatives of CM procedures and tools and overall development of the discipline, coaching of peers and new tool end-users

Requirements:

  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in systems, Electrical, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
    • 8–10 years of experience in system design and configuration management within complex software/hardware environments.
    • Experience in urban rail signaling (CBTC) or similar domains.
  • Technical Skills
    • Proficiency in DOORS, Polariton, Melody Advance, and PLM systems.
    • Strong understanding of systems engineering lifecycle and CM principles.
    • Familiarity with version control tools (ClearCase/GIT), issue tracking (JIRA), and ERP systems (SAP).
  • Soft Skills
    • Excellent communication, technical writing, and presentation skills.
    • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
    • Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and manage stakeholder expectations.
    • Strong problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills
    • Railway Industry experience (or similar) with understanding of the context for the job function: complex system development.
