Job Description:

The Sustainability & External Relations Manager provides strategic leadership and oversight for all environmental, water, permitting, closure, and community engagement programs at the Cripple Creek & Victor (CC&V) Gold Mine. Reporting to the General Manager, CC&V, this position ensures that CC&V operates in full regulatory compliance, upholds SSR Mining’s ESG commitments, and maintains its social license to operate through responsible environmental management and transparent stakeholder engagement. The Manager leads a multidisciplinary team of technical and external relations professionals, manages budgets and consultant networks, and provides direction on sustainability strategy, permitting, and community relations. The role integrates technical performance with corporate ESG priorities, ensuring CC&V remains a trusted and responsible mining operation in Colorado.

Day to Day:

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Develop and execute CC&V’s Sustainability & External Relations (S&ER) strategy in alignment with SSR Mining’s global ESG framework and operational objectives.

  • Serve as a member of the CC&V leadership team, providing strategic guidance on environmental, water, permitting, and social performance risks and opportunities.

  • Integrate sustainability considerations into mine life extension (MLE), operational planning, and closure projects.

  • Represent CC&V in engagements with regulatory agencies, community partners, local governments, and corporate stakeholders.

Environmental Management & Compliance

  • Oversee the team responsible for environmental compliance and performance across air, water, waste, and biodiversity programs.

  • Ensure adherence to DRMS, WQCD, CDPHE, EPA, and other state and federal regulatory requirements.

  • Direct environmental monitoring, data management, and reporting to corporate and regulatory bodies.

  • Lead audit readiness, corrective action tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Ensure alignment with SSR’s Environmental Management System and corporate sustainability standards.

Water Resources & Hydrology

  • Provide oversight for development and refinement of site-wide water balance and groundwater/surface-water models.

  • Ensure robust hydrological, hydrogeological, and geochemical data informs operational decisions and regulatory compliance.

  • Oversee regulatory processes for establishing site-specific water quality standards and discharge permits.

  • Support integration of water management into closure and long-term sustainability planning.

Permitting & Closure

  • Oversee and direct all permitting, amendment, and reclamation activities in coordination with engineering, operations, and regulators.

  • Lead regulatory engagement to secure approvals that enable operational continuity and mine life extension.

  • Manage closure cost estimates, reclamation tracking, and post-mining land-use planning.

  • Ensure permitting and closure activities align with SSR corporate governance and external reporting requirements.

External Relations, Communications & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Oversee and ensure effective community engagement, government relations, and transparent communications with all external stakeholders.

  • Guide the development and execution of communication strategies, community investment programs, and landowner relations.

  • Review and approve external messaging, media responses, and crisis communications in coordination with SSR Corporate Communications.

  • Represent CC&V at community events, public meetings, and in external forums to strengthen relationships and enhance public trust.

Leadership, Team Development & Budget Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary team of environmental, water, and external relations professionals.

  • Set clear objectives, performance expectations, and professional development goals for team members.

  • Manage departmental budgets, contracts, and consultant resources to ensure effective, compliant, and cost-efficient operations.

  • Promote a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement consistent with SSR Mining’s core values.

Is This You?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Hydrology, Sustainability, or related discipline.

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in environmental management, sustainability, permitting, or stakeholder relations within mining or a related industry.

  • 5 years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Strong understanding of Colorado and U.S. environmental and water regulatory frameworks.

  • Proven leadership experience managing multi-functional teams and complex regulatory interfaces.

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience in public forums and regulatory negotiations.

  • Demonstrated project and budget management experience.

  • Familiarity with ESG reporting frameworks, sustainability metrics, and performance data systems.

  • Professional designation preferred (PEng, PBiol, Pag.)

  • Knowledge of all local regulations applicable to Mining industry.

  • Experience in all stages of explorations and mining operations is desirable.

Work Conditions & Location:

  • Site-based position at high altitude (approximately 10,000 ft+).

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally and regionally.

  • Capacity to perform occasional fieldwork in variable terrain and weather conditions.
