Substation Design Engineer

As an Electrical Engineer in our Substation team in Engineering Services, you’ll provide solutions and services that help our customers critical electrical infrastructure and power systems worldwide. You will be responsible for substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US. Main responsibilities include creating electrical physical layout design deliverables and substation equipment specifications. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution facility upgrades to large transmission projects. This position will influence the safe, reliable, and economic operation of the electric power grid. 

   

As a Substation Physical Engineer in Engineering Services a typical day might include the following: 

  • Creating and leading detailed substation physical and electrical designs and support job estimates.  

  • Creating and leading development of substation physical designs involving substation general arrangements, section/elevation views, conduit plans, grounding plans, fencing plans, lighting plans, foundation plans, and bill of materials. 

  • Prepare engineering cost and labor estimates for proposals and provide input on schedules. 

  • Preparing calculations and reports for engineering studies (grounding, lightning protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.) 

  • Preparing equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing. 

  • Coordinating design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, others.) 

  • Providing guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members. 

  • Regularly meeting with and corresponding with clients or outside personnel. 

  • Performing quality reviews for other engineers and designers. 

  • Providing short term field support during construction. 

  • Supporting business development and marketing initiatives. 

  • Developing and maintaining an acceptable level of expertise in SEL and industry design practices. 

  • Using best available processes and tools and providing feedback on process enhancements. 

 

Required Qualifications 

B.S. In Electrical Engineering or relevant discipline 

5+ years relevant application experience with electric power systems, industry practices, and substation physical engineering 

Willing to travel both domestically and internationally a minimum of 25% based on focus area 

Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills 

Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities 

Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment 

Background check results satisfactory to SEL 

Negative drug test result(s) 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Professional Engineer License or equivalent certification 

Electrical utility, industrial plant, consulting engineering, or system integrator experience 

Project management experience 

Working knowledge of Vision or other project management tracking software

Pay Range Data

New hires generally start between $120,000 - 185,000. We base our starting pay offer on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills. Our salary ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location.
