Subject Matter Expert – Civil Engineering (PT/Remote)

KBR, in support of the Volpe Center’s Mission IT Support (MITS) Services program, is seeking a part-time Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Civil Engineering with advanced expertise in durability modeling of reinforced concrete, life cycle assessment, and modeling and design of reinforced concrete structures.

The Volpe Center provides operational and technical expertise to USDOT’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Infrastructure (ARPA-I) in support of and to advance the Exceptional Bridges through Innovative Design and Groundbreaking Engineering (X-BRIDGE) program. Through a cooperative agreement between ARPA-I and the University of Maine, this program is focused on creating transformative materials, designs, and construction techniques that can deliver bridges at half the cost, in half the time, and with twice the lifespan. The Volpe team is providing technical guidance to the program. The team aims to prototype a full-scale demonstration bridge using these new capabilities in partnership with an infrastructure owner and operator and to commercialize the underlying new technologies.

KBR’s SME will contribute to the technical guidance of the ARPA-I X-BRIDGE program. This expert will aid Volpe in guiding the bridge infrastructure research with input into the structural engineering, concrete and material deterioration and degradation processes and signatures, numerical modeling, and deep learning techniques used in X-BRIDGE.

**Candidate must be able to obtain Public Trust Clearance. This position requires an individual to have resided in the United States for 3 out of the last 5 years.**

Essential Job functions:

  • Evaluate and assess advanced composites materials designs for the X-BRIDGE project. Produce Technical Analysis Reports
  • Evaluate and assess advanced construction methodologies for the X-BRIDGE project. Produce Technical Analysis Reports
  • Limited travel may be required, up to two (2) trips to the University of Maine for three (3) days each and one trip to the Volpe Center or USDOT Headquarters for two (2) days.

Basic Qualifications

  • This position requires United States residency for three of the last five years.
  • Must be able to be cleared for a position of Public Trust through the Department of Transportation.
  • Experience leading evaluations and assessments of advanced composite materials and construction methodologies. X-BRIDGE experience highly desirable.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or related field preferred 6+ years of related experience.
  • Understanding of customer mission, strategic goals.
  • Good communicator and adept at presenting technical analysis reports

  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with stakeholders: sponsors, customers, end users, and trainers, as well as project technical staff.
  • Superior writing skills.
  • Experience with the full suite of MS Office tools.
