Summary:
The student teacher is the second of two clinical experiences that the teacher candidates complete in their program. This is their final classroom experience and occurs at the end of the program. The student teaching placement allows the Teacher Candidate to integrate coursework and prior field experiences, while continuing to gain firsthand experience in a classroom setting that supports their licensure program.
Essential Functions:
Teacher Candidates will observe, participate, and teach in a classroom while being mentored and observed to support their professional development.
The Teacher Candidate will “take over” the classroom for at least two weeks at the end of the semester. At that time, with the assistance of the Cooperating Teacher, the Teacher Candidate will be responsible for all lesson plans, teaching, and assignments. The two-week takeover may be modified, if necessary, but cannot be divided into segments shorter than one week.
A teacher candidate from the School of Education, during their student teaching semester, will teach literacy or math in a PreK-5th-grade classroom in a school in the DMV area.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Student.
Federal Work Study (FWS).
Spring 2026 Semester only.
20 hours per week.
Salary Range:
$17.95 per hour.
