The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) seeks an experienced and motivated Machine Shop Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of the MAE Student Machine Shop located in Scott Laboratory. This position reports to the MAE Shops Manager and plays a key role in supporting student learning, hands-on engineering education, and departmental research initiatives.
The Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for instructing and mentoring students and staff in the safe and effective use of manual and CNC machine tools. The role includes providing guidance on part and assembly design, ensuring all shop activities align with university safety standards and ethical values, maintaining equipment, managing tooling inventory, coordinating student employees, and fostering a professional, organized, and safety-conscious environment.
Key responsibilities include assisting with instructional support for shop-related courses and supervising the daily operations of the MAE Student Machine Shop. The Supervisor will maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment while promoting a culture of professionalism, respect, and continuous improvement. They will instruct students and staff on the safe and proper use of machine tools, including manual mills, lathes, sanders, and grinders, and provide technical guidance on part and assembly design, machining methods, and mechanical fabrication for coursework and student projects.
Additional duties include setting up, maintaining, and performing minor troubleshooting and repairs on shop equipment; managing and ordering tooling, consumables, and general shop supplies; conducting routine quality and safety audits; and ensuring full compliance with Ohio State University safety regulations. The Supervisor will implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure precision and reliability in machined components, supervise and schedule student shop employees, and work with students to ensure machining setups and operations are safe, efficient, and technically sound. They will assist students in evaluating and refining their designs for practicality and manufacturability.
The position also serves as a backup to other student shop supervisors and assists with the operation of MAE machine shops as needed. Support for the MAE Research Machine Shop with projects and prototype fabrication may be required. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in mechanical engineering or similar field of study. 3 years of experience in modern machining methods, materials, and equipment.
Desired Education
Master's Level Degree in mechanical engineering or similar field of study.
Desired: 4-8 years of experience in modern machining, materials,
and equipment. Experience in instructional settings, experience in machine design and fabrication.

Pay rate: $70,100-91,600 annually
The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
