What You Will Achieve
The Senior Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science will lead strategic initiatives that advance AI/ML capabilities for Medical, Safety, and Regulatory business, in partnership with Digital and Technology peers, focusing on real-world data (RWD) integration, analytical innovation, and secure, ethical AI deployment. This role drives technical vision, fosters cross-functional collaboration, and ensures alignment with long-term business objectives within a highly complex global operating environment. The position requires a proven leader who combines deep technical expertise with strategic foresight to influence organizational transformation and deliver impactful solutions.
Collaboration and partnership to achieve business objectives and meet customer needs will be key to this role’s success. You will build strong relationships with key stakeholders and delivery partners, including Medical, Safety and Regulatory business stakeholders, Forward Impact, Engagement, and Engineering Teams, the AI Center of Excellence, and the R&D Creation Center domain VPs, ensuring alignment with broader organizational strategies.
Leadership
Influence analytical and product roadmaps leveraging RWD for AI innovation, ensuring robust, scalable AI capabilities.
Stay at the forefront of data, platform, analytical, and technological advancements in biopharma and life sciences.
Collaborate with business leaders, AI CoE experts, and peer data scientists to integrate medical evidence and regulatory practices into AI pipelines.
Provide strategic oversight of business efforts, ensuring delivery excellence and alignment with enterprise objectives, including real world enablement and delivery.
Build leadership bench strength and succession plans; foster a diverse, high-performing team culture.
Technical Vision and Strategy
Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for long-term AI/ML vision aligned with enterprise goals.
Drive continuous innovation and adoption of emerging technologies to enhance R&D product experiences.
Maintain technical excellence through best practices in architecture, machine learning, and platform utilization.
Partner with internal and external stakeholders to design frameworks, data foundations, and architectures supporting strategic objectives.
Trust and Security
Champion ethical AI practices and compliance with global data protection and privacy standards.
Ensure secure deployment of AI solutions through rigorous governance and risk management.
Develop proof-of-concepts (POCs) and implementation blueprints for scalable, compliant AI systems.
Problem-Solving
Balance COTS and custom AI/ML solutions to address complex, real-world challenges.
Accelerate delivery and foster a culture of innovation through gamification and recognition of success and failure.
Apply theoretical knowledge to create practical, impactful products and services that advance organizational goals.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master’s) in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
12+ years of experience in Medical, Safety or Regulatory, or in data science, machine learning, or AI, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Proven track record of leading large-scale technical initiatives in biopharma, life sciences, or a highly regulated industry.
Strong understanding of business operations, industry trends, and regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and influence strategic direction across global business units.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with real-world data (RWD) and evidence generation in clinical or regulatory contexts.
Expertise in cloud-based AI platforms, advanced analytics, and scalable architectures.
Familiarity with global data privacy regulations (GDPR, HIPAA) and ethical AI frameworks.
Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with ability to translate complex concepts into actionable strategies.
Thought leadership in AI/ML innovation, evidenced by publications, patents, or industry recognition.
