A Sr. Consumer Health Specialist job is available with the City of Fort Worth Environmental Health Services Department Consumer Health Division. The Consumer Health Division performs comprehensive consumer and environmental health work, including the review of building plans, issuance of health permits, and conducting routine health inspections of food establishments, childcare centers, public pools, food trucks, hotels, and temporary events. The Division protects the public by investigating foodborne illnesses and preventing the spread of West Nile virus. 

A Sr. Consumer Health Specialist leads, monitors, assigns, and participates in the work of employees responsible for performing a variety of consumer and environmental health duties. They perform quality assurance reviews to ensure established policies and procedures are being followed. They will also oversee and lead special projects and address complex health issues and investigations. Lastly, they provide staff training and development to ensure Consumer Health continues to succeed in each program the Division regulates.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with major course work in environmental science, public health, food services or a related field
  • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible consumer health, regulatory or related experience, including one (1) year of lead experience
  • FDA/TDSHS (Federal Drug Administration/Texas Department of State Health Services) Standardization Certificate
  • Certified Pool Operator Certificate
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have a Master’s degree in Public Health, Community Health, or a similar field, or current enrollment in a Master's level program strongly related to Consumer Health
  • FDA/TDSHS (Federal Drug Administration/Texas Department of State Health Services) Standardization Certificate
  • Possession of a valid Texas Professional Sanitarian (R.S.) or Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian (R.E.H.S.) License
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have Spanish/English bilingual skills

The Sr. Consumer Health Specialist job responsibilities include: 

  • Performs comprehensive and environmental health services and investigates complaints filed by the general public regarding consumer health issues.
  • Provides quality assurance, which includes reviewing daily activity reports, inspection reports, complaint investigations, illness investigations and field reviews. Reports deficiencies to supervisor. Recommends corrective actions and monitors completion.
  • Trains, monitors, organizes and reviews work of subordinate employees.
  • Serves as lead on primary special projects for division. Coordinates events, variance request and approval process, fleet assignment and maintenance and monthly staff calendar.
  • Assists Consumer Health Specialist with complex inspections.
  • Handles complaint investigations of establishments or customer service issues.
  • Investigates complaints filed by the general public regarding consumer or environmental health issues.
  • Provides staff training and development.

Working Conditions 

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking and repetitive motions.

Physical Demand

Light Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work.
