The Global Operations Risk Management (GORM) Portfolio Management Group acts as a second line of defense (2LOD), ensuring that the bank's operational risk and control frameworks, policies, standards and procedures are understood and used effectively to manage operational risk. This includes working with assigned lines of businesses to identify, measure, mitigate and monitor operational risk.

What you’ll be doing


The Sr. Consultant, reports to the Director, TPRC, and provides independent challenge and proactive oversight and assessment of operational risks, with a focus on Third Party Risk Management, Business Continuity Management  and Operational Resilience domains.  As second line of defense, you are responsible for all aspects of operational risk management and control framework requirements including the identification, measurement, management, monitoring and control of operational risk. In this capacity, the Senior Consultant will build partnership with the lines of business and risk partners across CIBC to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach to managing risk.

The Senior Consultant, Operational Risk is a seasoned expert and contributes to the oversight of CIBC’s global operational risk exposures. The role uses deep knowledge to advise on the governance and management of operational risk and the implementation of effective plans and standards.

How you’ll succeed

  • Advisory Support and Independent Challenge - Collaborate with partners in your assigned business and subject matter experts (SMEs) across the 1st line of defense (1LOD), Control Groups, regional partners to ensure operational risk is appropriately identified/assessed, monitored/measured and mitigated. Be able to demonstrate the qualities of being a pragmatic and solutions-oriented individual.
  • Collaboration, relationship building and effective challenge - Establish strong working relationships across all business units, control groups, and regional partners, with a goal to develop heightened awareness and provide effective challenge regarding operational resilience, third party risk management and business continuity risk management across the bank.
  • Communicate effectively – You demonstrate clarity of thought in both written and verbal communications. You will facilitate productive risk discussions and outcomes and will develop and deliver strong reporting content, presentations and assessment summaries on an ongoing basis for senior audiences and risk committees.
  • Metrics and reporting – Contribute information to the content of reports for delivery to the Board, Senior Management, governance committees on third party, business continuity and operational resilience risk status, trends, issues and mitigation strategies/plan; Support the development of key risk and performance metrics to monitor risk.
  • Proactive oversight and assessment – You will review operational practices, risk assessments, controls, deficiencies and other relevant information to form an independent view of operational risks. You will identify material and emerging risks through proactive risk reviews and monitoring of Key Risk Indicators and External Events. You will effectively communicate areas or concern to ensure appropriate risk mitigation actions are taken.
