Skills Instructor - Central Sterile Processing (Part-time)

Job Summary:

Responsible to prepare and deliver hands-on learning in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to the college's core values, an understanding of culturally responsive teaching, and knowledge of the teaching field. Meet professional standards for faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach hands-on lab courses in accordance with the schedule of classes and follow the approved course descriptions and syllabi established by the Division faculty and administered by the associate dean/director.
  • Prepare, teach, and assess relevant subject matter for lab activities.
  • Demonstrate proper wrapping, sealing, and labeling of instrument trays using various materials.
  • Teach correct selection, use, and removal of PPE for safety and infection control.
  • Instruct on proper use and interpretation of sterilization tapes and chemical indicators.
  • Guide inspection, assembly, and testing of surgical instruments for cleanliness and functionality.
  • Effectively demonstrate procedures, coach students, and assess hands-on competencies to ensure students are prepared for industry standards and certification.
  • Return feedback to students in a timely manner as outlined in the course syllabus.
  • Monitor/assess during clinical in hospital/facilities.
  • Attend faculty meetings and meet with faculty or director as needed.

Supplemental Functions

  • Perform other duties as assigned. Perform all duties and maintain all standards in accordance with college policies, procedures and Core Values.
  • Teaching assignments will be primarily at the McKinney Campus and may include an occasional evening or weekend event.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and competency in Sterile Processing Techniques- Instrument identification and classification, Decontamination (manual and automated)
  • Knowledge and competency in sterilization methods
  • Knowledge and competency in high-level disinfection, tray assembly, and packaging
  • Knowledge and competency in use of chemical/biological indicators and tracking systems
  • Knowledge and competency in Infection Control & Safety
  • Knowledge and competency in infection prevention protocols and aseptic techniques
  • Knowledge and competency in OSHA, CDC, and AAMI/ST79 standards
  • Knowledge and competency in proper PPE usage and lab safety practices
  • Knowledge and competency in equipment proficiency operation and maintenance of ultrasonic cleaners, washer-disinfectors, autoclaves, and various sterilizers

Physical Demands & Working Conditions
Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work. Positions in this class typically include talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions, plus stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.  Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Office environment. Occasional physical effort required.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in Sterile Processing.
A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the role of a tech II or higher within the past five (5) years.

Licenses and Certifications

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) in the field of sterile processing through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) certification program.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification for Health Care Providers or equivalent.
Current member of the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).

Preferred

Preceptor or teaching experience.
