Cochlear has an opportunity for a Senior Wireless Research Engineer based in our Cochlear Mechelen office.

The Senior Wireless Research Engineer role exists to advance Cochlear’s mission of connecting people to sound and improving hearing outcomes through cutting-edge wireless communication technologies. This position is integral to the development and enhancement of Bluetooth-enabled devices and systems, ensuring seamless connectivity and reliability for Cochlear’s global customers.

The role focuses on designing, optimizing, and implementing wireless communication solutions that align with Cochlear's strategic objectives, contributing to market growth, product innovation, and customer satisfaction. The scope includes global responsibilities, with a direct impact on product design, cross-functional collaboration, and technology integration, making it both functionally and strategically critical.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop and implement innovative Bluetooth and other low power communication solutions for Cochlear devices.

  • Develop high efficiency wireless power and communications inductive links at less than 30 MHz

  • Manage research projects exploring the cutting edge of low power communications for miniature implants and develop associated patents.

  • Collaborate with R&D teams to define technical requirements and regulatory compliance.

  • Leverage advanced tools and methodologies to validate and optimize system performance.

  • Integrate wireless technologies with existing and new Cochlear products. Develop proof of concept prototypes for new communication systems.

  • Manage end-to-end testing protocols to ensure seamless device interoperability and lead troubleshooting efforts to address connectivity and performance issues.

  • Optimise RF communication links via use case specific RF channel models and improved antennas. Develop models and phantoms for implanted devices

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Bluetooth and other wireless systems, offering guidance and training.

  • Develop documentation and processes to support ongoing team learning and development.

About You

To add value to Cochlear in this role, you'll be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

Required Skills

  • Expertise in Bluetooth and other wireless communication standards (e.g, BLE, 802.11,).

  • Strong knowledge of RF engineering and wireless system design.

  • Experience with embedded system development and debugging tools.

  • Proficiency in software languages such as C, C++, or Python for embedded systems.

  • Familiarity with Bluetooth protocol stacks and testing tools (e.g., sniffers, analysers).

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of hearing aid and medical device industry standards.

  • Experience with low-power design and optimization.

  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles for wireless communication.

  • Knowledge of Agile development processes.

  • Proficiency in MATLAB or similar simulation tools.

  • Minimum 4+ years of experience in wireless system development.

  • 2+ years of experience in medical device or regulated industry preferred.

  • English – Fluent.

Certifications/Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Ideally PhD.
