Senior Video Graphics Animator

NYC - 1211 Ave of the Americas Full time

Job Description:

Senior Video Graphics Animator

The Wall Street Journal seeks an experienced, motivated Senior Video Graphics Animator to create compelling graphics and strengthen the visual language of our video team.

WSJ Video blends deep reporting with an array of formats: investigations, short and longform field pieces, fast-paced quick turn news content, video podcasts, social content, and series. And we are constantly innovating how we tell stories.

The ideal candidate has an extensive background creating graphics for video and a passion for visual storytelling. You have an impeccable eye for design, a drive to continually experiment, and an eagerness to support the team. You are adept at conceptualizing and executing ideas in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining high editorial standards. This role provides a great degree of creative freedom, but is also highly collaborative, so strong communication skills are a must.

You will:

  • Work on a variety of timelines, ranging from same-day turnarounds to longer term projects.

  • Collaborate closely with producers and EP’s to translate complex information into strong, legible visuals.

  • Streamline existing workflows and develop new ones when needed.

  • Provide creative feedback and art direction for team members, editors, and producers.

  • Help develop and maintain a large library of .mogrt templates for editors.

  • Occasionally work on breaking news pieces during evening and weekend hours.

You have:

  • At least 4 years of experience creating video graphics professionally, ideally in a newsroom/journalistic setting.

  • A dynamic, stylistically diverse body of work that demonstrates a range of skills and problem-solving abilities.

  • Expert level command of industry-standard animation and design software, including: After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop.

  • Deep knowledge of After Effects expressions, scripting, and templatizing assets as .mogrt files.

  • Firm grasp of video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro.

  • Solid understanding of 3D rendering techniques and software, such as Blender or Cinema4D.

  • Familiarity with map making principles and software, such as GEOlayers, QGIS, ArcGIS.

  • Experience with data visualization, research, and processing.

  • Drive to constantly learn new skills and stay up to date with latest technological developments.

  • A deep understanding and interest in The Journal’s core coverage areas.

The position is based in New York and will report to the Video Graphics Director.

To apply, please submit a resume, short cover letter, and a portfolio of your work.

The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.
