Responsibilities

We are looking for an exceptional Senior Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails) to work on the AI Agents Runtime in our growing, remote-first team. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to build next-generation agents for workplace automation. You’ll help create chat-driven, action-taking experiences that let enterprise users get real work done directly from their messaging and collaboration tools, powered by Workato’s platform. This role is fully remote, with team members across Singapore, Europe, and the US.

In this role, you will do:

  • Design, build, and operate backend services that power conversational, action-oriented agents within enterprise messaging and collaboration environments.
  • Implement and evolve APIs, background jobs, and event flows that connect agents to business systems and data sources.

  • Integrate with multiple third-party platform APIs (Slack/Teams, IdP, RAG, AI services, etc.), handling authentication/authorization, webhooks, rate limits, retries, and idempotency.

  • Enhance agent capabilities -tool/skill execution, guardrails, approvals, and auditability with security by design and compliance with enterprise requirements.

  • Collaborate closely with Product/Design to craft clear chat-to-action user journeys, and with SRE/Infra to meet reliability and performance goals.

  • Contribute to technical strategy and architecture (service boundaries, data contracts, caching, schema evolution) with scale, observability, and security in mind.

  • Raise the bar through code reviews, design docs, and mentorship on a small, distributed, senior team.

Requirements

Qualifications / Experience / Technical Skills

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience with strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails.
  • Interest and/or experience working with Go and Python for service development.

  • Experience designing resilient integrations across many third-party APIs at scale.

  • Familiarity with workplace automation/iPaaS tools and concepts (e.g., Zapier, n8n, Make, IFTTT, or similar), including triggers/actions, connections, and governance.

  • Solid command of web/API fundamentals: REST/HTTP, OAuth 2.0/OIDC, webhooks, pagination, backoff strategies, retries, and idempotent processing.

  • Strong foundations in testing (e.g., RSpec/Capybara/VCR), observability (metrics, logs, tracing), and performance tuning.

  • Security-minded engineering: PII and secrets management, least-privilege access, tenant isolation, and auditability.

  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Solid knowledge of object-oriented programming and design.

  • Nice to have: hands-on experience building chat systems/bots or conversational applications for workplace scenarios.

  • Nice to have: experience building or operating LLM-powered agents (any vendor), including designing safe execution paths with evaluations and guardrails.

  • Nice to have: background with enterprise identity and governance (SSO/SCIM/RBAC) and on-prem connectivity patterns.

  • Nice to have: exposure to event streaming and queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, Sidekiq/Celery), caching (Redis, Memcached), relational databases at scale (e.g., PostgreSQL), and complex containerized/cloud deployments (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS or equivalents).

Soft Skills / Personal Characteristics

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; strong command of English.

  • Readiness to work remotely and collaborate effectively with a distributed team across global time zones (Singapore, Europe, US).

  • High degree of personal agency, ownership, and relentless follow-through.

  • Ability to thrive in an environment of blunt feedback, hard debate, and fast decisions.

  • A team player who holds themselves and others accountable to meticulous, high-quality work.
