JOB TITLE:  Senior Software Engineer

SALARY: £70,929 - £80,000

LOCATION: Halifax

HOURS:  Full time

WORKING PATTERN: Hybrid, 40% (or two days) in our Halifax office

About this opportunity…

As Senior Software Engineer, you’ll take the lead on technical development and delivery at both team and sometimes lab level.  In this role, you won't just be writing code – you’ll also have a line management role, working as co-lead with the team Product Owner to ensure everything is delivered on time to the highest standard.

You’ll be responsible for overseeing tech delivery, owning applications, and managing the team to ensure everything runs smoothly.  This is an opportunity to combine your technical expertise with leadership, driving projects while keeping the team on track and motivated.

What you’ll do…

  • Build Robust software solutions that are stable, scalable, performant, secure, and accessible using endorsed technologies and best practices to minimise technical debt

  • Lead and guide the team, focussing on effective task allocation to ensure smooth tech delivery

  • Engage in code reviews and team ceremonies, helping to plan, prioritise, escalate blockers, and celebrate wins

  • Look for opportunities to automate repetitive tasks to streamline processes and drive efficiency

  • Contribute to technical communities, advancing shared capabilities across teams

  • Own application custodianship by actively participating in incident root cause analysis and applying learnings to improve systems

  • Mentor early career engineers, helping them to skills and contribute to a strong collaborative team culture

  • Invest in your growth, continuously developing your technical and agile skills

  • Ensure governance and accountability for technical assets maintaining high standards across all activities

What you’ll need…

  • Strong application or data development background. 

  • Essential experience of developing solutions in JAVA Springboot or Quarkus

  • Current experience within a software engineering role, with a good knowledge of the full development lifecycle

  • Experience of working as part of an agile team using agile practices and tooling such as Scrum, Kanban, Jira & Confluence

  • We would welcome someone that can demonstrate in-progress learning journey towards cloud technology; accreditations (Google Cloud Associate Engineer, Professional Data Engineer, or Cloud Architect) or further continuous development in other cloud technologies.

And any experience of these would be really useful…

  • Python, GCP DBT and GCP Dataflow

  • Software design and XP Programming principles

  • Data engineering, DevOps, test automation
