Bridgewater89

Senior Python Engineer

Westport Full Time
About the Role

We’re seeking a hands-on Python developer to help build and evolve the core language and platform infrastructure that power Bridgewater’s investment research systems. This role focuses on developing the foundational tools and frameworks that allow our researchers to represent and test investment logic at scale. You’ll work directly in Python to design expressive systems that manipulate complex data and model the global economy — combining technical precision with real-world impact.

You Will Drive the Following Responsibilities
  • Build and extend Bridgewater’s proprietary financial language, implemented in Python, enabling researchers to define and compute sophisticated investment logic.
  • Develop and refine Python-based frameworks, compilers, and data modeling tools that support large-scale economic and algorithmic research.
  • Implement and optimize syntax, parsing, and execution layers that turn research ideas into production-grade systems.
  • Continuously evolve platform functionality by improving definitions, logic, and performance of underlying financial data constructs.
  • Collaborate closely with research engineers and data scientists to understand computational needs and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience in technically rigorous or data-intensive environments.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Deep experience with Python, particularly in developing server based applications (not Web based).
  • Strong understanding of language design, syntax parsing, and runtime behavior — experience with DSLs, interpreters, or compiler tooling is a strong plus.
  • Highly analytical and systematic problem solver with experience modeling complex systems or mathematical logic in code.
  • Comfortable working in low-structure, research-driven environments, translating exploratory concepts into robust software implementations.
  • Preferred:  Exposure and knowledge of Numpy/Pandas

Physical Requirements:

The anticipated onsite requirement for this role is 2-3 days per week at Bridgewater's campus in Westport, CT, with the option to work offsite/remote on other days.

Compensation:

The total wage range for this role is $375k-475k inclusive of base salary, discretionary bonus and eligibility for Long Term Incentive. The expected base salary for this role is between 60-70% of this wage range.

Our Culture

Our culture is anchored in excellence—meaning constant improvement—and it is deeply tied to our mission. Because markets are objective, competitive, and getting smarter everyday—we need to keep rapidly improving to have any chance of beating them. Truth is our most essential tool for engaging with the markets and constantly improving. Because once you know what's true about your problems and opportunities, you can determine how to get better. Valuing truth means being transparent about your decision-making and mistakes, giving and receiving feedback with humility, and fighting for the best answers over hierarchy, ego, or self-interest. Operating this way is hard—it's only possible because we build meaning in our work and relationships. The meaning comes from the audacity of the mission, and the joy of working alongside people who make you a better version of yourself. The culture, like Bridgewater itself, is always evolving. In 1997 our founder Ray Dalio wrote down his lessons, starting with a Philosophy Statement which remains our foundation. This later evolved into a set of 300+ Principles. In 2022, when Ray transitioned the company, we re-underwrote several of those principles and evolved others, with a specific focus on Meritocracy. Today the culture sits, alongside our people, as our most important edge. When we get it right, it’s the engine that powers everything else.
