As a Senior PCB CAD Designer on the Spot electrical team, you will be responsible for all Spot PCB/A CAD design. Being the first hire in this position, you will have leadership opportunities to drive standard practices and processes. You’ll also serve as the central point of contact for outsourcing overflow CAD work. You will be a key member of a larger electrical team consisting of experts spanning RF, analog, power, and embedded computing. The ideal candidate will have a passion for layout and a background in electrical engineering so they can leverage their understanding of physics to produce optimal board designs. You’ll love working on a fun, collaborative, and talented team for one of the world’s coolest robots.
Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.
How you will make an impact:
Lead all of the Spot team’s PCB/A CAD design
Place and layout complex rigid, flex, and rigid-flex board designs spanning Analog, RF, power, and embedded computing designs (thick copper to coplanar waveguides to 10gig+ SerDes)
Manage outsourcing overflow work to third party CAD houses
Be the team’s Altium expert by helping engineers use the tools effectively, develop automated workflows/scripting, commonize board rule sets, etc.
DfX resolution
Package and release board design files for manufacture
Create and review ECOs in Arena
Manage and build out a company-wide shared component library
Drive board builds with support from supply chain
Collaborate closely with mechanical, signal integrity, and test engineering teams
Assist with component engineering tasks (multi-sourcing & resolving obsolescence issues)
We are looking for:
Degree in electrical engineering, physics, or closely related field
At least 8 years of directly related work experience (12+ preferred)
Strong understanding of circuit board design including stackup, via structures, material selection, HDI technologies, and DfX
Knowledge of the physics of electrical engineering (e.g. transmission line theory and effects of layout on signal performance)
Expert level Altium user
Familiarity with PLMs (Arena preferred)
A love of collaborating with electrical design engineers (e.g. you enjoy friendly heated debates on via placement for bypass capacitors in design reviews)
Appreciation for what quality layout looks like and a willingness to iterate until it’s right, even when that means ripping up layout in final cleanup
Highly detail-oriented and organized
Nice to have:
Component engineering experience
Experience with simulation tools (e.g. ANSYS tools)
Prior electrical engineering circuit design experience
Deep understanding of circuit board manufacturing process.
Familiarity with Python, Delphiscript, or similar scripting languages
We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
