Senior Metallurgist – Advanced Technologies

Major Focus: The Senior Metallurgist will be part of Mott’s overall innovation team and is responsible for providing technical support to customers (internal and external); developing new powders and materials; processes; engineering specifications; and performing metallurgical evaluations and failure analyses.  The successful candidate will collaborate with customers, design engineering, manufacturing, QA, and sales to help deliver high quality, precision products.  The Senior Metallurgist will also investigate opportunities for improving existing materials, processes, equipment, adherence to specifications and technology for attaining cost reductions and continuous improvement goals.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in the Company on powder metallurgy and material science.
  • Provide expertise and guidance on the relationship between material science and manufacturing processes.
  • Lead prototyping trials of new materials. Develop strategic suppliers with new capabilities and materials.
  • Provide scientific support and expertise to internal and external customers.

Major Challenges:

  • Ability to rapidly test prototype material in a matrixed organization with limited dedicated equipment.
  • Oversight of multiple tasks with varying priorities, goals, protocols, and durations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organization, management, and synthesis of of test data into actionable, statistically meaningful information.
  • Working with a multi-disciplinary team to arrive at manufacturable component designs and reliably performing systems.

Expected Performance Outcomes:

  • Develop new materials based on Business Unit specific product roadmaps.
  • Support, generation, and development of new powder suppliers, supplier capabilities, or materials.
  • Generation and capture of intellectual property.
  • Timely attainment of internal and external technical milestones.
  • Regular interactions with internal stakeholders to communicate and resolve technical issues.
  • Engagement with customers as appropriate to establish roadmap.

Required Experience:

  • M.S. or PhD in Material Science, Metallurgy, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience on Metallurgy including new material development.
  • Deep expertise in physical and mechanical properties.
  • Deep expertise in the relationship between process variables, alloy chemistries, and the resultant material performance.
  • Proven track record of project management.

Total Rewards

The compensation range for this position is $86,000.00 - $129,000.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
