Ovintiv’s Canadian Operations team has an opportunity for a Calgary-based Senior Manager to lead the Drilling & Completions Operations team. The position will be accountable for all Drilling & Completions activities in the Canadian Operations Area and will report to the VP & GM of Canadian Operations, and as such, will be a member of the Canadian Operations Senior Leadership team.

The successful candidate must have a proven leadership track record with potential to further progress their career and be able to lead decision-making and execution in an often time-constrained environment. The successful candidate will have demonstrated their ability to lead with a safety-first mindset and be able to implement broader strategic initiatives on top of day-to-day execution.

The candidate must have a personal leadership brand that people want to follow, they will encourage multiple points of view, coach for objective discussions, and help the team understand the why behind broader decisions.  The candidate does not necessarily have to be a Drilling & Completions subject matter expert but must be able to build credibility and effective relationships with team members, peers, in the field, and with vendors. The candidate will have demonstrated an ability to both drive innovation and manage risk. Field travel is required.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Lead the Drilling & Completions team, comprised of both office and field staff.

  • Effectively lead and develop the Drilling and Completions Managers.  Support them with developing a team that has a safety-first mindset, sound business and technical acumen, innovative, manages risk, proactively identifies and solves problems through collaborative decision making, executes with excellence, and consistently delivers value-added results.  Help ensure appropriate succession planning, and that team resourcing and dynamics are thoughtful for the future needs of the business.

  • Accountable for all aspects of drilling, completions and well workover operations, from wellsite lease construction through to well flowbacks, for the Canadian Operations area.

  • Accountable for delivering industry-leading environmental and safety performance by working in conjunction with all levels of Ovintiv EH&S to improve year over year well-site safety performance - ensure all activities follow regulatory, safety, and environmental compliance guidelines.

  • Lead in such a way that the appropriate analysis is consistently conducted, balancing risk, accuracy, and urgency with timeliness. Set clear expectations for the team and hold others accountable.

  • Provide guidance on drilling, completion and workover programs and develop and implement operational best practices in a cost effective and safe manner.

  • Responsible for overseeing, directing, and setting priorities and stretch targets for the drilling and completions teams.

  • Continue to drive innovation into the business – investigate and pilot new drilling and completion technologies that will enhance well productivity and reduce overall well costs, and report back using a consistent method of reporting performance metrics (KPI’s).

  • Accountable for accurate cost estimates, AFE generation, cost tracking and forecasting for the budget and monthly outlook processes.

  • Ensure mentorship is available for managers, engineers, and technologists to support them with their personal growth and career goals.

  • Build plans to ensure strategic approach is understood by the team for new and innovative initiatives partnering with the Chiefs, SMS, US Ops and EH&S.  Share knowledge, exchange ideas and help support each other. 

  • Perform competitor analysis and benchmarking to identify industry best practices and bring new innovative ideas into Ovintiv.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce GHG emissions from our drilling and completions activities.

  • Perform and/or assist in operational TapRoots and look-backs as required.

  • Collaborate with Supply Management on vendor management including RFPs, Vendor Selection, maintaining ready for hire status and communicating with vendors on a regular basis.

  • Serve as a role model for Ovintiv values including teamwork and trust, open communication, accountability, positive attitude, knowledge sharing, personal development and integrity, safety, community, and environmental responsibility.

 

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years in industry with a proven track record for safety and other leadership accomplishments.  Professional Engineer or CET.

  • Minimum five years of supervisory experience.

  • Strong leadership skills – growing capacity of others, and mentorship capabilities.

  • Proven judgment, analytical, and business skills.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in multi-disciplined teams with one team approach.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and changing environment.

  • Ability to make decisions and execute in a time-constrained environment.

  • Entrepreneurial attitude, high motivation.

  • Exceptional technical, communication, and project management skills.

In accordance with applicable law, the following represents Ovintiv's reasonable estimate of the hiring compensation range for this role.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $200,000 - $285,000

Compensation may vary and will be determined by the geographic location, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
