The Role

Rakuten Kobo Inc. is looking for a Senior Financial Planning Analyst to join our Finance team. This will be a critical role on the Financial Planning & Analysis team with the opportunity to work in a highly dynamic environment involving strategic advisory, data analytics, and corporate finance with a high level of responsibility and exposure to executive leadership. Kobo’s Finance team is an energetic and dedicated group of professionals that are highly involved in all facets of the business through the delivery of exceptional stakeholder value.

Reporting to the Manager of FP&A, the Senior Financial Planning Analyst will be responsible for the analysis, preparation, and delivery of Kobo’s financial and operational forecast, budget, and actual results. They will offer key analytical support and oversight to Kobo’s financial month-end process and to leaders throughout the organization. They will also play an important role in reporting to investors and Kobo’s Parent company.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, experience navigating dynamic structures to facilitate business decision making, be comfortable with advanced data analytics, and have demonstrated an ability to provide precise, data-driven analysis when dealing with a variety of stakeholders and an uncertain future.

This role has the opportunity for flexible remote work depending on manager requirements. Candidates will be required to work from the Toronto Head Office at least once per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing and delivering weekly forecast updates to parent organization
  • Provide monthly FvA & BvA analysis and facilitate management budget controls
  • Participate in annual business strategy development and budget processes
  • Act as the administrator of all sources of financial data, including budget, forecasts, and actual financial results to provide business support to various internal stakeholders
  • Support of financial Month-end activities, providing oversight and analytical support to operational teams during financial closing activities
  • Collaborate with Finance, Operations, and Big Data teams to drive strategic decision support and act as an essential business partner
  • Forecast, and maintain operational KPI metrics such as customers and units sold
  • Prepare and Provide regular reporting to investors and parent company
  • Work on other ad-hoc special projects

  • Expertise in Management Accounting
  • Financial Analysis & Data Analytics
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Budgeting and Forecasting

The Skillset

Technical skills:

  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel & Power Point
  • Experience with Business Intelligence Software (Tableau, Power BI, etc.), an asset
  • Experience with Python and SQL, an asset
  • Experience with ERPs (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, etc), an asset

Skills & Qualifications

  • University degree in Accounting / Commerce / Business Administration
  • Member / Candidate of a professional accounting designation (CPA: CA, CMA, CGA), an asset
  • Minimum 2 year (or equivalent coop) experience in a financial analyst role
  • Excellent conceptualization / graphing / charting abilities
  • Passionate about discovering meaning in complex data sets
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of accountability and data-driven results
  • Superior work ethic and ability to act both independently and collaboratively within a team
