Position Overview:

We are looking for a dynamic Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter – National Programs & Retail will play a key role in shaping and executing national strategies that drive profitable, multi-line growth while fostering a client-first culture within HCC. You’ll bring your expertise in leading through influence, optimizing small business and retail commercial lines performance across Canada. Will support staff by providing solution-focused underwriting advocacy and procedural expertise throughout the customer sales and service experience. This role ensures clients receive accurate advice, seamless service, and effective guidance while fostering strong partnerships with insurers, partnerships, brokers, and internal teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recommend and apply appropriate policy terms, conditions, coverage, and endorsements across a range of commercial industries and partnership programs.
  • Demonstrate strong, solution-focused decision-making using sound underwriting judgment.
  • Advocate, educate, and inspire excellence in assessing and advising clients on their insurance needs.
  • Act as a point of contact for quoting, underwriting, and procedural questions, providing guidance on both underwriting concepts and general insurance principles.
  • Work closely with leadership and insurers to clarify submissions, negotiate policy terms, and deliver responsive support.
  • Act as a resource to develop and strengthen insurance knowledge and understanding through strong relationships.
  • Support colleagues by providing guidance, mentoring, and technical expertise as required.
  • Provide feedback to management on trends, training gaps, and opportunities to strengthen The Triangle (Staff, Business, Clients).
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives and the adoption of underwriting tools and technology.
  • Respond positively to coaching and training, actively participate in Employee Quarterly Check-Ins, and leverage self-coaching tools.
  • Assist with other projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • RIBO license is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of commercial insurance experience, ideally in underwriting, sales support, or client service.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial lines insurance products and underwriting concepts.
  • Proven ability to apply sound judgment and deliver practical, solution-focused advice.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex insurance concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to adapt quickly, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines. Positive and Enthusiastic Attitude.
  • Desire to work in a dynamic team environment.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Post-secondary education preferred.
  • Availability to work various shifts and days of the week as required to support the clients.
  • Ability to handle fluctuating work volumes in a fast paced, customer focused environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and resourceful.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
