The Office of Legal Affairs, under the direction of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel, provides legal representation and advice to the University and all of its constituent parts, including the Board of Trustees, the President, the Wexner Medical Center, the Office of Academic Affairs, Student Life, Athletics, Human Resources, Business and Finance, among many others. As one of the largest universities in the nation, Ohio State is a multifaceted and sophisticated institution, with a high-level and leading-edge legal practice that touches nearly every area of law, including litigation, labor and employment law, constitutional law, civil rights law, construction and public contracting, intellectual property, business transactions, real estate, tax and benefits, public safety and criminal law matters, immigration law, sports law, administrative law, health care law, and privacy matters.
Under the day-to-day direction of the Senior Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, the Senior Associate General Counsel will provide sophisticated legal advice and guidance to the university and its Department of Athletics and Business Advancement specializing in business transactions with a primary focus on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and NIL-related intellectual property matters and all other business matters. The Senior Associate General Counsel will provide strategic legal counsel across units, supporting complex deal structures and contract negotiations requiring expertise in business law, intellectual property, and sports law, including NCAA and College Sports Commission regulations related to NIL and the laws applying to collegiate athletics. The Senior Associate General Counsel will be expected to lead and advise on NIL-related business transactions and intellectual property matters, including sponsorships, endorsements, licensing, and partnership agreements; draft, review, and negotiate contracts and other legal documents related to business initiatives, including but not limited agreements with student-athletes; provide general legal counsel to the Department of Athletics and Business Advancement on a wide range of business matters; monitor and interpret changes in laws and regulations affecting NIL and business operations, including NCAA regulations related to NIL; collaborate cross-functionally with operations, strategic initiatives, and external partners to ensure legal alignment with organizational goals; develop and deliver training and guidance to internal stakeholders on NIL and business legal issues; and other special projects and duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) and graduate from an accredited law school. Membership in the Ohio bar or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio within one year or less. Approval of the Ohio Attorney General's Office to serve as an Assistant Attorney General of Ohio. A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in transactional law, intellectual property, and sports law, including NCAA regulations and the laws applying to collegiate athletics.

The Target Hiring Range for this position is $163,300 to $213,450 per year.
