Major Duties:

  • Duties may include: Performing both day and overnight wilderness, front country and/or climbing patrols. Checking trails and wilderness campsite conditions. Performing a variety of resource management and maintenance projects such as reporting significant resource damage and maintenance problems, assisting with wildlife issues, campsite restoration/construction projects, search and rescue response, etc. Completing assigned resource related projects (i.e. wilderness campsite inventory, analysis and monitoring system, campsite rehabilitation, wilderness privy relocation and care, hazard tree analysis, minor trail work, fish census cards, etc.). Assisting with evaluating wilderness conditions and restoring wilderness campsites in technically challenging fire recovery area. Leading seasonal staff in field operations. Some positions may staff visitor contact stations to provide information to park users on a variety of topics, assisting with trip planning, preventative search and rescue (PSAR), etc. Area Information: Established on January 29, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a living showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. The park embraces 415 square miles of pristine, uninhabited mountains in north-central Colorado and, as such, is one of the most spectacular, yet easily accessible high mountain areas in North America. With elevations ranging from 7,800 feet at park headquarters to 14,259 feet at the summit of Longs Peak, the park has glacier-sculptured valleys, rugged gorges, alpine lakes, and vast areas of alpine tundra. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved continuous road in the United States, stays above tree line for 11miles and reaches 12,183 feet in elevation. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, coyotes, and smaller animals are found throughout the park, as well as threatened and endangered species, such as the Greenback Cutthroat Trout and Boreal Toad. Due to the park's easy accessibility to the Front Range communities of Colorado, Rocky experiences over 4 million visitors annually. The nearest community on the east side of the park is Estes Park, CO. Employees duty stationed in Estes Park, CO will be under the Denver-Aurora-Boulder, CO locality pay table. The nearest community on the west side of the park is Grand Lake, CO. Employees duty stationed in Grand Lake, CO will be under the Rest of US locality pay table.

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/23/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. SELECTIVE FACTOR: These positions perform Search and Rescue duties, and emergency medical response certification at the First Responder (e.g. Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness Emergency Medical Responder (WEMR), etc.) or higher level is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Park Ranger (Wilderness). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to the following: issuing wilderness permits, conducting backcountry/wilderness day or night patrols, disseminating information to promote responsible backcountry/wilderness use and safety, verifying compliance with regulations, promoting leave no trace and safe wilderness/backcountry use; performing search and rescue operations in a park, forest or wilderness setting, using search and rescue equipment such as wheeled litter, backboards or splints; maintenance and rehabilitation/restoration of wilderness campsites and facilities including privies, impact monitoring, and assisting with wildlife issues. You must provide hours per week worked on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level study in directly-related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. You must submit a copy of transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example: 6 months of specialized experience as described above may be combined with one-half year (9 semester hours) of graduate level college study in a directly-related field of study as described above to meet the qualifications requirements for the GS-7. You MUST submit a copy of transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
