Position Summary:
Abiding by the Mercycare Mission and Values the RNFA provides the Department of Surgical Services with a Perioperative Nurse in an expanded role, capable of acting as a first assistant in a variety of surgical procedures. Under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon, functions during the assisting phase of the role until the conclusion of the operative procedure. Does not concurrently function as scrub nurse.
Education Requirements:
Graduate of a two or four year school of nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred upon hire (required completion within 2 years of hire). Licensed Professional Nurse in New York State. CNOR Certified in Operating Room. Completion of an accredited course from an RNFA Program. Certified in ACLS. Certification preferred upon hire (required within 2-years).

Principal Responsibilities:
1. Patient Assessment:
A. Assess the physiological and psychological status of the patient.
Collects and documents data about patients. Interviews patients and plans care according to patients’ needs and surgical interventions. Assesses patients preoperatively based on data collection. Utilizes historical and clinical data in collaboration with the physician and other heath care professionals. Records all personal data, problem identification, interventions provided, results in care plan, follow-up and referrals. Provides postoperative assessment of patients.

2. Patient Safety: Provides a safe environment and care for the patient.
Applies principles of asepsis and demonstrates surgical technique. Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective action. Applies electrocautery in a safe and knowledgeable manner.

3. Patient Care Planing:
Develops individualized plan of care based on patient needs. Reviews the planned procedures and determines any unusual techniques/instruments/equipment to be utilized. Analyzes critical situations and plans and implements appropriate actions as a team member. Assists with positioning, prepping, draping of the patient or performs independently if directed by the surgeon.

4. Surgical Competency: Demonstrates surgical competency in assisting with surgical procedures.
Provides hemostatis by clamping blood vessels, coagulates bleeders, and ligates vessels directed by surgeon. Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques. Handles tissue as directed by surgeon. Sutures fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissue under the direction of the surgeon. Place and sutures drains as directed by the surgeon.

Professional Responsibilities: Updates knowledge of nursing theory, clinical practice and current trends in healthcare. Attends team meeting, unit meetings and departmental inservices > 80% of the time. Identifies goals and objectives for professional self-development. Submits self-evaluation on an annual basis.

Pay Range $41.45-$59.80 based on experience and location
