Respiratory Support Technicians have ample opportunities to experience a wide range of patient populations and different patient care activities performed by Respiratory Therapists. A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) variable shifts.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Perform targeted rounding in active patient areas to recover assets for processing and re-distribution.
- Support Respiratory Therapy in many clinical activities under the direction of a licensed Respiratory Therapist.
- Clean, deliver, evaluate and inspect specified medical devices, such as infusion pumps, syringe pumps, feeding pumps, PCA pumps, DVT pumps, specialty beds, specialty carts and procedural trays.
- Document work activity in an electronic database.
- Stock and take inventory of Respiratory Therapy equipment, supplies and inhaled medications.
- Operate laboratory equipment, perform EKGs and record vital signs.
- Set up and download overnight pulse oximetry trend studies.
- Assist Respiratory Therapists with orders.
- Follow up and assist with administrative duties.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High school diploma or GED
- Akron Caregivers must be a student currently enrolled in an Accredited Respiratory Program * Continuing employment is contingent upon the completion of an Accredited Respiratory Program within 5 years of hire.*
- Strong background in math and science
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross within new hire period
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Prior healthcare experience
Physical Requirements:
- Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Normal hearing and vision or corrected to normal range.
- May require sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
