NTU SINGAPORE

Research Associate/ Assistant (Smart Wearable Systems)

NTU Main Campus, Singapore Full time

The Hyundai-NTU-A*STAR Corporate Lab brings together a wide cross-disciplinary approach to advanced manufacturing technologies, involving multiple A*STAR research institutes and NTU colleges and schools, such as the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), and the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS).

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and optimise smart wearable systems (e.g., head-mounted displays, smart glasses, smart gloves) for data acquisition and task recognition in real automotive assembly line scenarios, including the integration of acoustic sensors.

  • Conduct human factors testing of wearable hardware and integrated team systems in real-world assembly line environments, evaluating effectiveness, efficiency, and comfort, and analysing usability data to generate insights and guide design improvements.

  • Develop evaluation metrics and benchmark wearable devices on usability, efficiency, comfort, and operational performance across AR/VR and industrial contexts.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, and operations) to integrate AI models with wearable hardware, ensuring alignment between device capabilities, datasets, and system deployment.

Requirements:

  • Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Industrial Design or related fields, with training in Product Design, Human Factors, Ergonomics, or Interaction Design.

  • Proven industry experience in product or industrial design is required, preferably with wearables, AR/VR, HCI systems, or AI-driven hardware.

  • Strong publications in leading international conferences and journals, and/or recognition in international design awards.

  • Solid foundation in human-centred design and human factors evaluation, with applied knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) for scalable hardware product development.

  • Proficiency in 3D design and modelling software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Figma) to support hardware development. Essential skills include programming (Arduino, Python), data analysis, and AI integration.

  • Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
